Gonzo got a reaction from MTCowpoke22 in The Ascent clock, an oversized hood ornament
I've had a couple of posts about the making of this clock in Works in Progress and Tutorials. I'm not sure if I should be putting this in the bragging part of the forum for the simple fact that I can't get it to run more than 7 or 8 seconds.
Hence, the oversized hood ornament comment. (Big smile)
I was challenged and had a lot of fun making this clock. It is made from Baltic Birch plywood and walnut. I remade all the gears hoping that was the problem, but to no avail. So, I will let it be, until this fall, before I putz wth it again.
It still is a cool piece of work in my opinion and am very happy that I made an attempt at this.
Jeff, from Wooden Gear Clocks has been awesome in helping me. Also, I've had the pleasure of "getting to know" Scrappile Paul while making the clock. He too is making the clock, and we've emailed back and forth. To those of you that gave me input trying to help me, I thank you all very much! And, a special thanks to Scrappile, it's been fun Paul, keep in touch.
Have a great weekend everyone, and a Happy Mothers Day to all you Moms

Gonzo got a reaction from MrsN in Members name;
I always kinda figured it was like having a handle back in the days of CB's. Your handle was your nickname and everyone knew you by that name. Me, I'm a clown and very proud of being one. My clown character name is Gonzo. People call me that whether I'm in costume or not. And I'm ok with that. Actually I'm pretty proud of that. Besides which, "Hey Gonzo!" Is a lot better than "Hey Dorkwad," Big big smile.
Signed
Gonzo or Matt or Dorkwad. Now I'm all confused.

Gonzo reacted to Scrappile in Zero Clearance
When I do delicate pictures I need a zero clearance table top. In the past I have made a 1/8" table top to put on my Ex with a little hole drilled in it for the blade and "zero" clearance. Over time the hole get bigger and bigger until there is no more zero clearance. When that happened I made a new table top. Last night it hit me, like duh, why replace the whole table top. Why not just drill a larger hole, make an insert kinda like my Hagner has. Here it is, took me about 15 minutes and I can easily make a supply of inserts to replace worn out ones. So simple.

Gonzo got a reaction from Falcon in Progress on the "Ascent" clock, do's and don'ts
It's been going slow on the progress of my clock. The weather has started to turn towards the nice side, so I don't want to be indoors. Plus I've been working some long days. But here are a few thing I've learned while cutting the gears.
Do be in the right frame of mind.
Don't be thinking about the round of I've just finished today.
Do cut the perimeter of the gear before the "insides" of the gear. Chances are that's where a person will screw up, so why waste the time cutting the inside of the gear.
Don't do a beer belch while wearing the dust mask. ( though someone had mentioned that in another post).
Do follow the lines. Unlike fret work, where you can sometimes sort of go away from the line and come back to it, you can't do that while cutting a gear.
Do change blades. Why do we worry about a 25 cent blade?
Do stop and get up and stretch.
Don't stop breathing, cuz eventually, youll take a deep breath and fog up the cheaters.
Do walk away, or do something else if ya just ain't "got it".
This has been an awesome project to work on. I only have a few more pieces to cut and then comes the assembly. Wish me luck that it works.

Gonzo got a reaction from Clayton717 in new bowls
It's supposed to get up to 60 here this weekend. I might have to fire up my lathe and give that a try. But 60 degrees can still make knuckle rappers and stingers hurt. Kind of like swinging a golf club or baseball bat when it's chilly out

Another very cool bot there Scrappile.
I'm with you on the nice weather. Don't know how much scrolling I'll be getting done with the weather getting nicer. One nice thing though is I'll get to take my scrollsaw out of the basement and into the garage.

Gonzo got a reaction from Lucky2 in The start of the Ascent clock
I started to make the Ascent clock this past week and got "a lot" of progress done this weekend. I purchased the plans and hardware from Wooden-Gear-Clocks.com. The plans seem pretty straight forward and so far are easy to follow. That is, if I take my time and read and follow the instructions carefully and in order.
There are nine pages of blueprints, and a very good instruction booklet.
The first four pictures are of the frame assembly. the next two pictures are of the weight pulley assembly. and the final one is of course the secon, minute, and hour hand.
It has been a lot of fun so far.
My machinist background has been a big help, but I find myself asking, 'what are the tolerances'?
I thought I had pictures of the pendulum and pendulum bob but can't find them. The pendulum bob has a unique but very simple spring for when I need to adjust the swing of the pendulum.
I have the weight box to finish and then I'll be working on the gears.
