Hi Dan, the top is all one piece with no separate pieces glues back in. I cut two test pieces to figure out the look I wanted and to make sure I didn't cut out any pieces. I did a little bit of carving to get the look of the "braid", then darkened those areas just for effect. It was a fairly simple design that got a bit complex to achieve the braided look and keep it all in one piece. Thank you so much for asking about it.
