  1. Sounds like a lot of interest. What a privilege to have a gallery showing.
  2. I started carving the animals in January...so around 8 or 9 months. The carving took a lot longer than the actual construction of the carousel. I took a break from carving around April, built the carousel, then finished the carving while on our 2 1/2 month summer RV trip to CO (We live in HOT southern AZ). Since the photo I've added a flag on the top, a couple benches and a "love tub", that kids would get it and spin in it circles.
  3. I actually used three different plans and then improvised in combining them as well as included ideas from other miniature carousel builders.
  4. There is a miniature carousel maker that sells rough outs. Each animal is cut on a band saw in around 10 parts...thighs, lower legs, body, tail, head, neck, etc. It saves a lot of band saw time but I totally carved each part, glued them together and painted them. From basswood.
  5. Wire support worked for awhile but mine kept getting looser and looser. I pulled some of the pieces off but then others cracked. Finally just had to order a new line.
  6. Finally have the Carousel almost finished. This shows the scroll saw work that surrounds the different parts. I carved and painted all 12 animals (8 go up and down) and rebuilt much of the original construction to include the scroll saw work. The picture is sort of blurry because I had to have it rotating to have the lights come on. Only you guys will appreciate the 16 panels and 24 ornamental pieces (mirror surrounds and animals) around the top. LOL
  7. I agree this is probably the easiest program to do it in and you sure will get better photos than scanning, copying, etc.
  8. Love them. I have so much sympathy for families with an autistic child. The disease is so misunderstood. Those families need all the help they can get.
  9. Wow! Never heard of this before. I went to site you showed and was amazed. I doubt I will try it but it might be great fun... good job.
  10. Great job. I'm going to have to make some of those.
  11. Great find and nice job!
  12. I totally agree with everything you have said. I would be with you in posting it but this site has a decidedly conservative bent and it would not be worth it. It sort of, in a very subjective way, reminds me of the long posts about atheistic sayings where some people started expressing their own religious beliefs and felt post should be in line with those beliefs. There are other places you can post the cutting; this is not the place to shake up traditional beliefs.
  13. Beautiful job. I'm going to check the pattern out. Did you carve the horses, also?
  14. That is exactly the way my ol' trusty DeWalt sounds when I forget to tighten the blade before turning it on. Before returning it I would just make real sure the blade is very tight. When you pluck the blade it should make a high ping. If it is making a thud sound, you aren't getting the tension on the blade tight enough. Good luck.
  15. Great job. I am working on a large wood carving project and the author of the plans uses Gesso for undercoating all his work. Most recommend shellac, spray varnish, linseed oil, etc. I'm finding the Gesso does make a superior undercoating. There is a reason that paint artists have been using it for a 100 years for undercoating. You have just proven again that it works. Well done!
  16. My past experience with vibration is to bolt it down to a heavy base. Many people find the pads help but I think the best to bolt it down solid to something that doesn't vibrate. Some people have actually bolted it to a base then put sand bags on the supports.
  17. Great job. It makes me miss our spaniel so much....
  18. Great tree. I love it.
  19. Yep, I discovered the blue tape and never went back. Once in awhile I try something different and always go back to the tape. Better late than never, Frank.
  20. Great job. Glad to see alternative ides for the season being posted.
  21. Nice job.
  22. Great job! I'll have to make a similar one for our groomer.
  23. And here I thought I was going to see a cutting of Obama! Couldn't figure that one out. Oh well, you still did a great job.
  24. I have ordered more wood from them than anywhere else and think their supply is amazing. Glad you got the tour and it doesn't surprise me that it is strictly a mail order firm. I'm sure they were willing to show you around or they wouldn't have done so.
