  1. Little bit too far away. I will still help you with patterns best I can though. I'm just starting out making scroll patterns, but will answer any questions you have.
  2. While I agree Dewalt is great (I even own several of their products), you also can't buy a Dewalt saw for little over $100. Unless you get really lucky with a used one for sale. If I get more into scrolling I will eventually upgrade my saw.
  3. This wasn't really a matter of being cheap, more of I wanted to try the blades out just to make sure I like them before I order too many. From what I've heard about them...I should love them. I'm still in the trying things out and picking what works for me phase.
  4. Thanks for the words everybody. And thank you for looking!
  5. The wood was 1/4 Ply. As for the purple it might just be the picture? It was just a quick snapshot, and I don't think it captured the color. It is Lavender though, and not purple. That might be it too? Couldn't do much with that, since that's the color of the support ribbon and that was the shade of it they had.
  6. I ordered some Flying Dutchmen Blades a few days ago, very excited for them to get here. After I try them out I will have to order more. I just ordered three types, and they are all smaller ones. Seems like having a few of the bigger ones would be nice too. And no problem, glad you were able to cut it.
  7. Looks great! I'm currently practicing patterns too, and will be cutting more first portrait soon. I hope it comes out half as good as yours!
  8. Great job, it looks flawless! I think I'm going to try cutting this in the near future. Where might I find the pattern for this?
  9. I made this for my neighbor, who is battling Cancer. She loved it! Just a simple design I made, and I had the idea to use felt for the purple. I'm overall happy with how it came out, and especially with how the cuts are really pretty clean. I feel it's an improvement over my last project. Not sure if it was practice, or the new blade I used. Maybe a bit of both. The one thing I don't like, is the black paint I used. No idea why I used it, I guess it's one of those things that sounds good in your head...then not so much once you do it. Next time I will use a color that will make the backing pop a bit more; and that is more cheery. I feel the black is too dark and morbid.
  10. Nice clean cut pieces. Glad you got around to making the feather! What blade did you use to cut that? Brand, #, etc..
  11. Great cut!
  12. Nice piece!
  13. Thanks Marg! I used a No.5 Skip Tooth Olson blade. What number should I have used for a piece like that? Or was 5 about right? Also, do you like the Flying Dutchmen Blades? Really wanting to try those out, most people seem to love them.
  14. Thanks guys, I can't wait to do my next project. And Carl, I'm 24. I will put that on my profile I suppose. I don't generally like to advertise that because I find in this hobby (or just in general really) I don't get much respect being so young. Not saying anything about the site, everybody has been real nice here...but in person; going to stores, etc.. People can be quite rude and not take me serious. Hope my age doesn't change any of your opinions of me.
  15. I'm back with my second project! I made this pattern myself (and will share if anybody is interested). I made it on some cheap pine wood. Kind of wishing I had used the nice piece of Birch I got since it came out pretty good. I could probably work on the letters a bit, I think part of the problem is I need a better stand for my saw. It can wobble at certain speeds. Maybe new blades too, I don't know...will just be something I have to mess around with. Might just need some more practice too. I was going to put a thin backing on it, or mount it...but actually ended up liking it freestanding. I just dipped it in 50/50 BLO and MS, going to put a few coats of Deft on it tomorrow or the next day. What do you guys think?
  16. I try to do as much research on things as I can, but it's always nice to ask people directly. Thanks again for the help, I'm excited about giving this all a try!
  17. Great, thank you for the response. I think I will just stick with the 50/50 boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. I will also pick up a can of the Deft spray. So just dip them in a container/tray of the mix, then wipe off the excess. Let it dry for 24 hours (maybe a bit longer), then give it a couple coats of the Deft. Sounds easy enough. Oh, and store the left over mix in a metal paint can or glass jar. And let any rags dry layed out flat so they don't spontaneously combust. I've heard horror stories that the most dangerous thing about the oil is the used rags themselves.
  18. Nice pieces!
  19. Guess it's true, the most important tool you can have is patience.
  20. Awesome piece! Nice work! Mind if I ask about how many hours this took you?
  21. Wasn't sure if I should make my own new thread, or just post it here, but anyway.... It's about time for me to finish a project, and after lots of reading (including this thread) I'm more confused than when I started. There seem to be so many options out there for finishing, and I know some of it might just be preference. I don't expect a "perfect in every way method"....but I was hoping you could help me narrow it down on what I should use. Maybe a quick comparison. - I bought Boiled Linseed Oil and Mineral Spirits the other day, that's what I was planning on using. Then I read even mixed 50/50 it can never really dry and remain "sticky." I know some of you use it though, so have you ever experienced that? - What about 100% Tung Oil? I hear that's good and it's even food safe in it's pure form. Seems like an all around good finish. Are there any cons to it? - Teak and Danish Oil? And for a clear coat, it seems most people use Deft. That's a lacquer right? Which actually seeps into the wood for a better bond, than polyurethane? Thanks in advance, and sorry if these questions seem silly.
  22. Thanks everybody. I actually started another small little project today, hoping I can finish it tomorrow. I wish I didn't have to work and could just scroll all day.
  23. Thank you, I'm kind of a perfectionist with some OCD so I think that's where the attentional to detail comes from. I take a lot of pride in whatever I do, and if it isn't up to my standards I will either fix it or start again. Lucky for me, this one came out good first try. Thanks for all the encouragement people, you're making me want to go make something else....RIGHT NOW.
  24. Thanks for the welcome everybody. And dgman, I live in San Diego.
  25. Thank you all for the kind words. I'm hoping I can make something else very soon to share with you all. I was actually wanting to make a certain portrait, but seem to be struggling with making the pattern. Perhaps I should head over to the pattern section and see if somebody can help me out with it?
