  1. Looks great! Your pattern? I have some reclaimed lumber I just picked up that would look great for this.
  2. I was inspired by Sheila Landry's work, but all her plaques like this are bible verses and neither my husband or I are Christian. So I found a quote I love from Carl Sagan and designed this. Cherry ply. 12" x 19"
  3. I'm with you Fab4, I don't worry so much about my time because this is just a hobby for me. I focus on covering cost of materials and a few extra bucks on top of that. I'm happy when the hobby pays for its self.
  4. Great idea and outcome! I do a similar thing quite often. I use cheap pine boards (the knotty ones look extra good in my opinion), give them a light coat of latex paint, let that dry, then sand it off a bit to "roughen" it up. Then stain it. Going to have to try adding the sawz all to the process to see how that looks! The white one has a light stain and the grey one has a darker stain.
  5. Must have been the 1/2" pine.... Pulled out some 1/4" walnut to play today and the spirals held up fine. Well, snapped one but that was a tension/clamping issue for sure...
  6. Haha, good point on the temps! I have used a few out of this batch, but not on this saw (the tension setting is way different, I might just be putting it a touch to high) They're snapping right at the top of the table. I'm going to try again today with some different wood and see if it wasn't just a tension and project issue.
  7. Thanks, didn't really think about tension it I was frustrated and just switched plans. Do you use less tension typically with a spiral vs flat? Also am going to try again to day with some 1/4" and see if the wood was part of the issue.
  8. I've used a few out of this batch when I first bought them, but I guess that doesn't mean there are bad one's in there. Do you use less tension with a 0/3 spiral than a flat blade of similar side?
  9. I bought some FD spirals last year and they sit in the garage so it's been super hot and cold throughout the year. Tried using them yesterday for the first time in months and had 3 break within seconds of turning the saw on (2 before I even touched wood). They are tiny bits of metal, do they start to corrode or weaken with time?
  10. That is great!! I used to do a lot of mosaic art and still have a couple buckets of tiles somewhere.... hmmmm......
  11. That is spectacular!
  12. Very nice, I love the color choices!
  13. Great start!!
  14. Some really great work there! Thanks for sharing.
  15. Thanks for all the great resources! I did order one of Kathy Wise's books last night. And I've been thinking about trying one of Judy's class room in a tube's when I have some spare cash. You've got a couple sites here that I had not seen yet so thanks again!
  16. I didn't think about it til I was done, but there was a couple tight edges that would have been much easier with a dremel.
  17. Thanks Dick! I totally see what you're saying about putting in some height/depth differences on the wings. And I very much plan to try new patterns with a mix of colors and woods. My big goal with this piece was to see if I could cut something to pieces and still glue it all back together haha! Now that I've got that step down I can start to play
  18. Ah that totally makes sense for why the edges weren't doing what I wanted, didn't think to switch to a rougher grit!
  19. That is stunning!
  20. Took my first shot at intarsia today. Can't remember where I found the pattern, pretty sure I was looking through stained glass patterns when I found it. Any tips or things you notice? I had fun doing this and would like to try some more. Also I used my table belt sander with 600 grit. I feel like I had a tough time getting much shape to the edges. What tool and grits do you like best?
  21. Thanks! I used dye that specifically designed for resin, but depending on the project and type of resin I'm using I sometimes use cheap acrylic craft paint to tint the resin.
  22. It's 2 part epoxy resin, Alumilite Clear Cast. An 8x8 pan has about 1.5 cups of resin which is roughly $3 worth if you buy resin in bulk (it gets exponentially more expensive if you buy the little bottles in crafts stores). So probably a bit more expensive than wood depending of course on the wood you compare too.
  23. Whelp.... 3 days. The saw is going back to the garage (though he's trying to get me a better heating situation) and AND guess what I got for Christmas?! The Dewalt 788!!! No more Porter Cable for this kid! New saw might be worth the trade off of being back in the garage. EDIT: I spoke to soon! We negotiated leaving the saw inside a while longer. But if I don't stay on top of the dust out it goes. Fair enough!
  24. You mix the color straight in with the resin. Then I just drag a toothpick through it to get the swirls. I don't do pen blanks personally, but I do know there are people out there using the resin to do so.
  25. haha! I think I missed that page!
