Need your opinion, SSV.. If I can't get the size I need without "gluing", how does cherry plywood compare to hardwood in terms of finishing, longevity, etc ?
Here's the project I'm working on.. My daughter is getting married in May and I want to make her a "collection" box for the reception. I have it designed out, patterns, etc.. and want to use nothing but the scroll saw to make it. The finished product will be 7 pieces and the overall dimension will be roughly 8" wide, 15" long and 14" high. The back will be hinged with a little heart lock on it. The top (with the slot) will be cut at an angle. Of course, scroll work will be done on the sides and in the front, then I'll use 1/8" backer board with a different color to line the inside.
I just finished a "prototype" out of some 1/2" plywood stock I had left over but the final piece, I'm thinking 1/4". 1/2" just seems to bulky and heavy for this project. I want it to be more "elegant" than if I was making a tool chest
But I want something that going to look great and last a very long time - so they have a keepsake they can always use for candles, etc.. If plywood isn't going to fit the bill, I don't want to use it.. However, if cherry plywood, finished with BLO (or whatever) will look great and will last them, then I'll spring for that..
