  1. Day 1 of a 2 day event was today. I had to shake the rust off and remember how to do this! :-) Sold 40 today with a decent sized crowd ($885). Tomorrow should be better since today wasn't a holiday for many folks. Goal for tomorrow is to sell 60. Dogs were the number 1 selling item as usual selling 14 of them. I sold several items I only had 1 of on hand, so I'll have some cutting to do next week to restock. Next Saturday I heard about an event called WoofStock... a dog festival. Dog parade and everything. LOL I'll give it a try and see if enough dog crazy folks show up.
  2. Hi Jes, I stick to my state (NC) but I travel up to 2 1/2 hours from home particularly for 2 large (GREAT!) events where I used to live and I can stay with friends to cut down on costs. I travel up to an hour for a few events around me and most of my events are within a mile. I did 28 events last year. As you know booth fees vary. For me it's anywhere from $20 to $250. I just got accepted yesterday to the $250 one that takes place in August. I rent 2 booths ($500) so I can set up a certain way that improves my sales. As mentioned, do your research and if possible visit the event before signing up unless it's an absolute slam dunk sure thing. I have a 2 day event tomorrow and Saturday that is excellent and will be my first time as a vendor. Looking forward to diving back into events, it's been a long winter. Iggy
  3. Mrs. Ig has been watching hours upon hours of videos on YouTube about pour painting and has been stockpiling supplies and she has done about 5 or 6 paintings so far as she experiments with styles, methods, tricks. She loves it and the ones she has shown to friends have been well received. Here are 2 of them and you can see the wide diversity in colors and styles that you can go with. Then you get into the whole "OK, now, which way does it go?" Turn it this way... or this way... or this way... :-) Leave it completely up to each person what direction they like best.
  4. Yeah, Mrs. Ig likes red also which I'm guessing is what color it'll end up. I think I'll be doing the painting myself.
  5. I can't wait either... 12' x 12' x 12'... with storage up high for coolers and other lightweight items.
  6. Yep, gotta free up space for puzzle factory and my wife has taken up a hobby (pour painting) and will need a work space. Will likely have part of the garage walled off to build actual work spaces for us that we can heat and cool. That'll be down the road. I'll just be glad to get a lot of big stuff out of the garage that just takes up space and isn't used much. I enjoy manual labor and building things... but I figured a shed was something I didn't want tumbling over or on top of me so better left to a professional. :-)
  7. Here's my new garden shed just delivered! Some assembly required... By someone else... Soon. Will be used for storing lawn and garden items, mowers, coolers, bicycles, etc.
  8. I'm so tired of this "cold" weather (my version of cold is much different than most of the rest of you. LOL) but I'm ready for warmth... then I can bitch about how hot it is in the shop. Last day of cool weather for us today. At least I haven't been out there building a new fence and a shed like the guy I hired... he looks cold out there as I peer out my window. ;-)
  9. Were your non-puzzle items in retail stores? I've tried puzzles in stores 3 times with no luck. When they're shrinkwrapped folks don't grasp the fact that they are puzzles, so I want to try non-puzzle form, unwrapped just so people can touch and feel them.
  10. Hey Duke, it was either $20 or $25, I'll ask him next time we speak. And he does a lot of them as non-puzzle. I'm going to try some of those in retail locations as soon as I have a chance to make a few.
  11. Folks, don't be confused, this was one of my zombies, not me. His name is Tom, down in Mississippi, this was his first big event and his results.
  12. Yep, he didn't mess around, going with a 10x20 tent... I only use a 10x10 but now at events that I know they cram you up against each other, I pay for 2 spaces and set up in the middle of the space.
  13. Tom started buying patterns from me a couple of months ago and had a lot of custom ones made for his local area. Funny... he called me to tell me this, then he posted it on a Facebook page we both take part in. LOL ==== Tom wrote: My wife has been less than enthusiastic about me spending so much time in my shop on the scrollsaw working on these puzzles. She agreed to help me with one show, so this past weekend she worked this booth with me at an arts festival in our hometown of Ocean Springs, MS. She started out just doing the credit card sales portion for me, but as time passed and we were selling more and more, she got involved in the total process. By the end of the weekend, she couldn't stop talking about it and last night she informed me that we made $1540! Fast forward to this morning. I woke up at 5:30 and rolled over to find her not only awake, but looking at her phone. Before I could say a word, she said, "Well, it's about time you woke up, sleepyhead. You need to get out there and start cutting some wood!"
  14. I dip (the entire puzzle) in mineral oil and then let soak in on a rack. I get about 400 puzzles per gallon of mineral oil so the cost per puzzle is minimal ($22 per gallon)
  15. Stunning.
  16. Nicely done Kevin. Harvey has done some beautiful vehicles... even though he can't drive them. LOL (Amish joke)
  17. Duke adapted the Harvey Byler puzzle patterns to be non-puzzle. You can do it as well, or see both puzzle and non-puzzle varieties on my site, scroll down to the patterns area. www.WoodcraftByScott.com
  18. FYI - the video of the story is now available at the very top of the article/link.
  19. A great story just now on CBS Sunday morning about using your hands and feeling happy. Personally, I've found great pleasure making my silly little puzzles the past 2 years. I truly enjoy making each and every one of them. I get a sense of enjoyment as well as accomplishment as I finish each one. This story definitely resonated with me. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/handiwork-how-busy-hands-can-alter-our-brain-chemistry/
  20. 3M 45 for me... 77 is pure evil... I swear it trapped a bird flying over my house in it one time. ;-)
  21. As some of you are aware I started up another side venture... a local map of our beach communities showcasing all the island has to offer and selling ad space on the map. I didn't want to wait until next September to start it while I knew merchants were flush with cash at the end of a big summer season, so I kicked this off at the absolute worst possible time... November-March when things are slow and many businesses are closed for the off-season... It required a lot of visits to merchants hoping to catch the owners around and hearing a lot of "we just don't have the money for that right now" but here it is... my first edition... still some more work to do, but it's almost ready for printing in time for the summer rush... In September is when I'll begin selling the spaces for 2019 while all businesses are still open and have lots of money in their pockets.
  22. Yep, able to see it and download it. SUCCESS!
  23. Hey Ray, not really sure what trouble you're having, but by simply clicking the paperclip below where you're typing your comment you can choose any file/document to attach to comments here in SSV... Just as you do with an email. If what I'm saying is confusing you, you may want to get one of your grandkids to help you. ;-) Attaching PDF here as an example. Puzzle Display Stands by Scott.pdf
  24. I'm not a groupie or a follower. Or maybe it's just cuz I'm a bit slow. :-) When I find something I like I stick with it... Olson Mach Speed were my go-to blade... now I have 2 gross of them to find something to do with. LOL
  25. Yes, you're definitely insane. I cut the VW Beetle about a year ago and swore I'd never do another of the vehicles... way too detailed and the letters were small (yes, I can enlarge the pattern, I know)... and mine was in my usual 3/4" poplar... not 7/8" maple!!! I look forward to hearing how the experiment goes if/when you get back to finishing it.
