  2. WOW thanks for the kind words
  3. say I wanted to put a piece in a picture frame, would i just use say poster board for the backer so it woill fit into the frame? or will 2 1/4 in. pieces fit?
  4. Thats what I currently do, so I think i'll stay with that....thanks for your input
  5. So you finish the piece first then cut the perimeter ?
  6. When cutting a backer board, should I be cutting it the same size as my work piece, or just enough to cover the subject matter? and if your backer board is a different color than your cut piece, do you leave the outside edges different colors or do you do something to make them the same color?
  7. This is my first attempt at portraits, they were alot of fun..
  8. Thank you EVERYONE for the kind words, I am brand new to scrolling, in fact I've only done 7 projects total so far, so I have lots to learn and am eager to take any advice or tips from anyone, also I am not offended by a useful negative criticism, I want to be the very best scroller I can be, but I can't do that unless more knowledgeable people than me critique my work in a positive way. I mean if it good then its good but if not, I welcome your opinions as well. Thanks again, it really means alot to me coming from experienced folks.
  9. Dave Monk, I used a piece of 1/2 in oak for the backer and stained in a dark Mahogany, Probably oak is n't the best choice for a backer, but I brand new to scrolling so I don't know what is good to use for a backer, I did quicly discover that using cheap thin wood from the "big box" store, can be trouble, everyone tells me to use baltic Birch it doesn't chip like regular thin plywood, I'm still figuring out what types of wood works best for different projects.. thanks for the kind words
  10. I have a porter cable 18" variable speed scroll saw, I think i'm having a little trouble with it, the blade seems to have a lot of side to side action to it and it makes it hard to line u on a line but maybe this is normal, I don't know, I've only made 2 projects so far and I have broken 2 others, I just finished one tonight, waiting for the glue to dry and I will post a picture of it. as far as what I like to cut? right now, I'm cutting anything, trying different skill level patterns, I really love outdoorsy stuff hunting/fishing animals, I also like christmas decoration, bowls, candle sticks, boxes etc.....
  11. Need a little work on painting a straight light but all in all, i'm pleased with it.
  12. Hello everyone! My name is Loren (yes that is a girls name but I am a guy..lol) I'm 42 years old living in Phoenix AZ for now getting ready to move back to Michigan this summer. Im brand new to the fun and exciting world of scroll sawing, I got into it because I quit my job as a Mechanical Engineer to be a stay-at-home dad to our 2 and one on the way kids (OMG this is the hardest job I've ever had) but after 2 years of doing this, I started to go nuts and in desperate need of something to do other than laundry, cleaning and acting like a child everyday. I wanted to find something that didn't take up a lot of space and didnt make a bunch of noise, I had always loved woodworking and had a full shop back home in Michigan,So I bought my first scroll saw 2 weeks ago, and I am hooked and in LOVE, I've made 2 projects that got rave reviews, Ive broken 2 projects several hours in to them...ugh! and am finishing one now (except I messed up the staining so im trying to figure out how to fix it). I look forward to meeting you all and learning all I can.
