  1. These are just 2 of the 14 finished projects i had asked about painting. Not perfect by any means, but the family loved them! Merry Christmas everyone!
  2. I want to thank everyone for replying. Everyone have an awesome Merry Christmas! I will show the final edition when finished.
  3. These is my Christmas project for family. 14 of them! I’m pretty much done with all the staining, but wanted the group’s opinion on painting two items. I was thinking about painting the bow red and the smaller fireplace flame yellow or just leave them as is. I highly regard your opinions on this! Thanks, Ray
  4. a friend of mine gave me a piece of cider 22" x 18" x 2". who or how do i get it sliced down to several 1/4" or 1/2" thick pieces?
  5. thanks everyone who commented and gave advice, suggestions. coming from all of you on this site means a lot since there are so many on here that have inspired my whole endeavor into the scroll saw world several years ago. all of you are simply the best! ray
  6. Is there such a thing as segmentarsia? if, not i just invented it! This piece is actually all 1/4 inch wood but built up to look like it is a true Intarsia. I couldn't afford to buy, and in some cases even find the thicker pieces of wood needed to make a true Intarsia piece, so i improvised. the walnut is the only wood not shimmed up to give the different levels look. now ome questions i have: even after cutting all the pieces out when i tried to put them all together i ran into many that simply wouldn't fit together. i spent many a hour sanding and shaping to get them to finally fit. so what exactly did i do wrong when cutting them all out? I know this isn't exactly the forum for questions, but i didn't want to post this twice. thanks, ray
  7. finally done with this one other than still not sure of what color background. light blue, some kind of sunset, etc. any ideas?
  8. AWESOME! My favorite of all of them has to be the Dragon! is that a pattern placed over a mirror? if, so that is a very cool idea!
  9. I had left over pieces from a prior project and had the “what if?” moment....this is the end result. IMG_0375.MOV
  10. thanks everyone!!!!
  11. some stuff i have done recently. the wind chimes was my design after my old one fell apart. i kept the pipes. the tennis ball clock was something i came up with too. the flowers and gun are patterns i bought.
  12. i haven't been on this site in awhile, but i had to show off the largest project i've done to date! almost 24" x 36". i had to do it in 4 sections and then put them all together because it was that big. Very proud of this. my only regret is that i'm no artist when it comes to painting.
  13. Thanks everyone for your kind words regarding my cousin and also for the suggestions regarding the memorial cross. The wood was a 1" thick pine. i had drilled a hole in the very bottom and put a long piece of rebar in it. I guess his family hammered it all the way to the ground hence the rotting. Ray
  14. ok, gang, i have an issue i need help with. one of my cousins died back in May due to a car accident. I made a cross for him and the family (wooden) that lasted until a few days ago when it rotted at the base. I had painted it with an outside paint and treated it with an outside coating spray. I'm doing another one so i need some suggestions on how to make this one last. I.e. material, paint, etc. thanks, ray johnson fellow scroller.
  15. talked to Ray at Seyco as someone had suggested. Thank you for that advice. New clamps are coming at his suggestion.
  16. Does anyone work with the Jet 22" scroll saw model JWSS 22B? the reason i'm asking is that no matter what i do i cannot align the blade front to back. I've turn the motor clockwise and counter clockwise to no avail. I've contacted Jet but they have as of yet responded and i'm wanting to know if anybody else is having this issue. Eyeballing it from underneath it's as if the bottom clamp's specs are off so that it sits behind the top clamp. All this came about when i was trying got do compound cuts of 1 3/4. Earlier i had sent pics and frustrated comments that the bottom of my cuts where lagging behind. I tried everything suggested to no avail so i went and borrowed a friend of mines less expensive porter cable saw and had no issues cutting. please tell me someone else has experienced this using the Jet.
  17. i don't post many of the things i do because they pale to most of what i see on here, but i couldn't pass this one up. IMG_0378.MOV
  18. i've started painting some of my projects and yes they suck! I'm brush painting and no matter how hard i try to keep the stroke smooth it comes out like this. I'm thinking that if i just spray paint the whole piece (the angel) first then come back and do the intricate areas afterwards it wouldn't look as bad? on the second one the same thing with the fire place part? needless to say i'm not going to win any awards for my painting prowess. lol thanks again gang for all your feed back, Ray
  19. ok, i'm not an expert on acrylic paints so i need some advice. i bought some acrylic paint the other day from Walmart to use on a project i'm working on and come to find out this stuff is like working with colored water. I know there are oil base and water base paint but wasn't sure what would be best. Now i find there is also heavy body acrylic and light body(which is probably what i got from Walmart). It would be nice to be able to just clean up with soap and water too. I appreciate everyone feed back in advance
  20. Thank you ! Thank you! thank you! It's true i get excited when someone asks me to make something for them because it means they like what i do, but also because i like seeing a project go from start to finish. I don't know about the rest of you , but every time i finish one i always seem to catch myself saying, that turned out better than i had thought! As for the pricing ideas it gives me a base to work with now. ray johnson
  21. ok, now that my family has gotten several presents made by me and has put my name out there this year a lot of friends are asking me to do Christmas/Birthday projects for them also. I thought i had asked this question a while back, but i couldn't find the replies. So how do i go about figuring out what to charge for these projects? I've pondered trying to keep track of how long it takes me, but i'll get distracted and forget to stop or start my timer for each sessions i'm working. I estimated the cost work materials that's fairly easy, but it's the time invested that i just can't figure out. I'm not out to gouge anyone, but it would be nice to be compensated for the time involved. Most of the patterns i'm using i've bought so i'm not having to factor in designing. i've enclosed just a few samples of what i've done. right now i have 29 offers for Christmas! Glad i've started early! LOL thanks, gang, for all your tips, replies and advices in advance. ray johnson
  22. I'm trying to find woodscrollers in my area, but can't seem to locate any body so i figured i would try here and maybe one of the members know of someone. I'm in Tallahassee, Fl. I'm trying to get with someone that knows the trade very well because i have some issues that hopefully i could arrange to meet with them and get some pointers. thanks, Ray johnson
  23. finished! it turned out even better than i had hoped!
  24. the wood burning tool is just a basic Walnut Hollow brand for about $15.00. i also bought a set of tips for another $10 on Amazon, but i haven't even come close to using any of them so that probably was an unnecessary purchase. Right now my son and his teenage friends are helping me come up with a background color other than the traditional black that i see all of the time.
  25. first off i actually have #ed bits but only goes to #60 so thanks for letting me know about even smaller ones. This is how i solved my hole issue. i went back with my wood burner pen and masked them out by outlining everything. I think it came out rather well. thanks for the advice about putting holes on both ends for a balance look.
