  1. Someone getting in early for this year.
  2. I don't know about you guys but I spray both the pattern and tape covered wood, no matter what glue I'm using.
  3. Well done on the cut and thanks for the mention. No need to apologize, the pattern is more of a guide than anything.
  4. Yep, it helps to understand where you might be going wrong. You probably don't want to cut every pattern you make else you may have quite a bit of wood to get rid of.
  5. Hi All, Thought I'd try something different this weekend and this is how it ended up. Tried to simulate a wood grain, in a segmentation piece, using Gesso. This is cut from 6mm MDF, coated with Gesso and then painted. After the paint dried I gave it a light sand and a little coat of sealer, put it on a backing board and that's it.
  6. Welcome to the family Bernie.
  7. If the floater needs to be somewhere specific, like a logo or something, then put the waste back in, glue the floater and remove the waste.
  8. I like the Indian maiden but I'm not real sure what the other one is.
  9. Nice result. Looks good.
  10. I was playing around with this sort of idea, the angles of the cut, for doing a boat hull. To get the angles right I found a cutaway image of a boat hull and loaded it into Inkscape. Inkscape has a tool for measuring angles which made it kind of easy to get right. I would then draw some straight lines through the image to make some layers. If the angle was greater than 90 degrees then I would just subtract 90 from that to get the inverse angle and go with that, or something like that. I'd have to find the paperwork I made when I did this. As long as the wood is not overly thick then the sanding can be kept to a minimum.
  11. Yep, all segmentation. Seems easier to do, cut it up, sand it, stain it and glues it back together.
  12. Here are a few others I have cut over the years. These ones were local show entries. The Eagle was the first one I ever done, it's made from 7mm ply and stained. The Draught Horse is also ply and stain. Both are backed with some fancy material that I can't think the name of, it kind of shimmers in the light. The Tiger is the same as the other two, ply and stain/paint. It is backed with printed material. I wanted something jungle like and this was the best I could get. It makes the image stand right out. For some reason I have strayed away from this type of work and moved towards fretwork. I might have to go back to it one of these days.
  13. I just thought I'd mention something about MDF. Colouring it can be easily done with Highlighter pens and it doesn't bleed into the fibers. Even colouring the edges can be done with minimal fuss, it just applies perfectly. The only problem I can see with edge colouring is getting into tight places with the highlighter.
  14. You would be cutting the white Jerry.
  15. I saw that you had a moonshot comp but I was too late in joining to enter that one. I had a crack at it for something to do. There are so many images that you could put into something like that.
  16. So, apparently it's the year of the rooster. I found a design for this while looking on Pinterest and thought I need to do that. It's cut from 3mm MDF. I'm not sure how I'm going to finish it though. Maybe stain it dark and put it on a lighter backer.

    Hi All

Thank you everyone, I'm sure I will enjoy the site. I was a member of AFSP all them years ago and started designing back then. I reckon I've got better at it since then. I do tend to visit the site quite a bit, especially when I've got nothing better to do, even if I'm at work. Ain't nothing wrong with a bit of freedom when you're supposed to be working. I also enjoy a bit of a challenge when it comes to patternising a picture, although I'll draw the line when it looks super difficult. I'll upload some pics in the near future of some of the more recent stuff I have been doing. I mainly only do stuff for myself or friends that ask me to do it.

    Hi All

I have just joined the forum and am saying Hello. I have been scrolling for about 10 years now and still enjoy it. I don't have any preferred style when it comes to scrolling. I'll either do Segmentation or Fret, I have never actually tried proper Intarsia as Segmentation is much easier and less time consuming. I have also dabbled in a bit of pattern designing and now mainly use Paint.net for anything I do. Mainly because it is as good as Photoshop and totally free. I currently use a simple entry level Scroll Saw, an Ozito brand actually, it does the job.
