  1. I get mine lljohnson’s workbench. picking up some Friday at the wood expo.
  2. I made my 4th live edge dining table out of spalted maple. It’s amazing how one table morphed into 4 and one more to go. I had a person that works for a lumber mill ask me to make a live edge cherry table. He called and said the cherry was about ready to come out of the kiln. They’re easy to make just a pain because of the size and weight. But at $1000 dollars profit I’ll put up with the inconvenience.
  3. Spent the slabbing out Osage logs.
  4. My friend got several logs of cherry free. If he didn’t take it the burn pile was next. We got 5 pallets on the first sawing. My friend kiln dries his with a homemade kiln. Some of the logs were 31” across.
  5. Try making bandsaw boxes with spalted maple they look great. I have a friend that gives me extra wood hat to get rid of it. He’s a wood turner so I get his junk wood. On walnut slabs my friend has several as well as cherry, oak and curly maple. I get it at at below market price. When I make live edge tables I charge market price and give him the money. That way we both come out at about $1200 apiece after expenses.
  6. I I helped my friend save cherry logs headed to the burn pile. We spent 4hrs sawing slabs from the cherry logs. Some of the logs were 30” across. 5 stacks for $425. The price of one slab.
  7. The furniture looks great. As much as I build I never thought about combining the two. But lately I’ve been building live edge dining tables. Great money maker for me. Below are my last two and I have another that will be done next week .
  8. I have both a planer and a drum sander that I bought from Johnson’s Workbench. I planning on going to the Wood Expo at Johnson’s in a few weeks and take advantage of the good deals.
  9. I spent this morning helping a friend cut 8 big cherry logs. Some of it was curly. I plan to buy some to make live edge dining tables. It’s a good money maker. We had 4 pallets of slabs 2 1/2” thick. Some of the logs were 30”+ in diameter. Not bad for free except the cost to cut them. One slab sold equals the cost of milling.
  10. I have been woodworking for over 50yrs. Still enjoy it. I’m in the shop almost everyday. I taught woodworking 40yrs. I love not having to supervising all the students butchering wood but I had fun helping students with projects.
  11. Awesome setup!!
  12. I made a flag out poplar and had a friend cnc the stars. The stripes are barn red and antique white transparent stain. The star field is ink blue.
  13. I bought a 12" Delta Cruzer which has a clone in Ridgid. I replaced my radial arm saw that was 45 yrs old.
  14. I fixed the. Same problem about six months after buying one it was easy. I have had no problems since and that was 3 years ago.
  15. I have a special place to get the slabs. On those I was told pay me whatever whenever. The next table is going up in price. I suggested $500 a slab but he said $400 a slab was good. He felt like any higher of a price we would be ripping off our customers. My next table will be $1800 that’s $600 more. I gave the person a deal because that was my first live edge dining table.
  16. The finish I used was Rubio Monocoat one coat rub it out and your done. I used 80ml on each side. It goes a long way. People complain about the coast but I only used a 1/2 can which came out to about $26 because the can is $52. I would have spent that much on regular finish a put at least 3 coats and would have sanded it to 320 instead of 120 to180.
  17. I finished the table and bench last Saturday.
  18. I have one on my 14” bandsaw that Ouse exclusively with an 1/8” blade. I have a second bandsaw I use for resawing.
  19. Curly maple, curly cherry, gummie cherry and poplar for puzzles.
  20. If I butterfly it I use curly cherry or curly maple. It’s up to the person I’m making it for.
  21. Started live edge walnut table for a friend this week. I told him to bring a Crain to pick it up.
  22. My friends say you will be very happy with your new planer. I sold my 13” Delta planer that still ran great and upgraded to a 15” jet helical planer. I give away my old tools to friends as well.
  23. On your way upgrading the shop that’s great! I started upgrading mine six years ago when I retired. Just about all my equipment has been upgraded. I gave my old equipment to aspiring new to woodworking friends.
  24. I put them on my Delta with no issues.
  25. I have the Delta pegas chucks and I had to put lock tight on the set screw to keep it from moving out from use.
