I was in Lowes earlier this week and they had one of each. I already had a Dremel and looked at the drill press option. But then I saw the plunge unit and thought that would be more versatile as others had said...so I bought the plunge. After trying it that night I'm sure I made the right choice. I figured out (with the help of You Tube) how to use the WEN pinless adapters. Now I can use the Dremel and a 1/8" bit or smaller (largest that will fit in my Dremel) as the pin blades didn't fit in the hole. But holding the blade, adapter, and tightening the wing nut I need 3 hands...and I was born with only 2. So I found and ordered a couple of blade holders that replace the stock chrome holders making it a pinless blade only saw. They should be in today or tomorrow. Has anyone done this? Does it work better?

I did the same thing earlier this week...lol. I was at Lowes and walked by the wood flooring isle...stopped and looked at the samples and ones marked down. The thought went through my head…" wonder if anyone has tried to scroll one of those"...lol. I was going to ask...but being a newbie I thought I had better keep my mouth shut. I'm glad to know there are others that weird scrolling thoughts when they see a piece of wood! If I see a solid wood floor sample I'll grab it!

Welcome back! I'm new here and to scrolling...like about a week! I love the house pattern! And would love to learn how to make and cut a pattern from a picture! If you could please ( or anyone who makes and cuts picture patterns ) post a picture...the pattern...and the finished cut. This would help my old newbie brain to see what could be when looking at a photo. When you have time and nothing else to do. BUT...please make it a simple beginner type so it will register through the cobwebs...lol.

Getting the hang of it! select font...select size...set as default...make a text box where you want it then use "abcdef…" to put design font on paper! To be able to find what I want I made text boxes and just went through the alphabet, printed it, and wrote the corresponding letters below them. Any of that make sense? Or is there an easier way to do it? So far I'm having a blast!

I think I did it...? I got it onto Inkscape...it showed up in the fonts. When I click on the name I see a few beneath the justification icons. I can make them large and small with the font size. Now...how the heck do I get one on the page/work area?

OK... I went to DaFont and found what I wanted Dingbats - Nature - Printers Ornaments One by Dixie's Delights - hit "Download", it shows a zip file in lower left corner. After I hit it the window shows 2 files : Printorn True Type font file and Printorn Text Document. I double click on the font file and it brings up a box showing a bunch in horizontal lines, each line a little larger than the one above. I hit "Install" and it shows it installing. Then I find it in my folders and double click on the zip file. Next I hit "Extract All" and get to a window showing all fonts across upper center...down the left are sizes: 12 18 24 36 48 60 72, each showing an example of a font getting a little larger. That is as far as I can go! How do I get a font to the "paper" on Inkscape??? Driving me nuts!! It's a short trip LOL. I'm sure it's very simple and easy...but I've never seen the program before and the videos don't make that move very clear...to me. Thanks!

I've looked at things done on a scroll saw for years and thought "WOW! That's so cool! I could never do that." So now I'm going to make a crude attempt to "do that" !

Thanks all! The print on a label idea sounds good. I used my heat gun the other day on my "first born" but I think I have mineral spirits in the shop from other projects. Yes you definitely want to let the rag dry out flat or hanging! My WEN has adapters to use pinless blades but I haven't tried those yet. I did get a package of Olson blades.

What are you guys using for spay adhesive to hold patterns down while cutting? This is what I had around from a stencil project several months ago. It doesn't come out real smooth and I think it was expensive at Hobby Lobby. Also what size drill bit do I need for pin end blades. I could just try some...but thought you guys would know off the top of your head. Thanks

I've thought about the WEN as well as a bunch of others in the $60 - $80 or so range. These tend to be benchtop 8" or 10" presses about 30 - 40ish lbs. I will probably get one of these at some point for scroll as well as my other woodworking attempts in my home shop. I hear WEN is probably the best of the batch in this size/type of press. My thoughts about the Dremel setup is mainly for a "travel drill press" to take with me when we go south for the winter. Lots smaller and lighter to throw in the 5th wheel with all the rest of the stuff for a 3 - 4 month road trip. As others have said, I will put an adjustable chuck on it from day one...thanks for reminding me!

I'm new to scroll sawing as well as this forum...so I'll have a lot of dumb questions. I notice in most of the patterns you have to drill a hole to stick the blade through to do inside cuts. I don't think a hand drill is a very good option...at my age I'm not as steady as I use to be lol. So...while looking on line for a small lighter weight drill press I noticed a "drill press stand" for Dremels and other similar motors. I wondered if any of you guys (and gals) use them? They show to have a 2" stroke, I'm guessing 90% of scroll work is on materials less than 1 1/2"...? Also I would like to take my new saw with us to south TX for the winter and that (if it works) would be a lot easier to transport and store. Thanks for your advice!

New to scrolling, just got a saw yesterday! And my first creation...don't laugh...it isn't that bad...lol. Looking forward to hours of fun...might try to sell some too. Thanks for the add Gary
