  1. You’re fighting against nature. Wood breathes like skin and every wood spiecies has its own characteristics. There is a litany of information available as you are well aware of. Grain direction is key but not definitive. Even if all the stars are aligned and you’ve done everything correctly there is still a margin of luck involved. Your tenacity should be applauded but in the end you might still be peeing into the wind. I wish you luck on this journey. The pleasure and pitfalls of working with wood.
  2. I agree with most. It’s whatever floats your boat. I use the flip up type because I where glasses and they come with multiple magnifying lenses. Mine are not lit like some models. I’m very satisfied with my modified light on my saw so I don’t need the extra lite

    DeWalt DW788

I’ve had two 788’s. First one was bang on. Worked fine right out of the box. Smooth solid saw. Switch went after a year so I just installed a pedal switch instead. Lost that in a fire and ordered a new one. This one is smooth and solid also but had some adjustments to make so the 5 inch blade would seat far enough into the blade holders to keep from slipping out. This had to be done before the saw could be used. A problem that I should not have had. The fix is a not difficult one but someone without some skills may have trouble.
  4. Western red is very toxic and should be used accordingly. High in resins which is why it is a good choice for exterior applications. This wood is no joke when talking toxicity. Be very respectful when using it
  5. This is what I’ve done to one of my planers. Laminate makes a great base. If it ever gets gouged it can easily be replaced.
  6. Put a Formica covered plate over the bed. Made one for mine. Works fine. Made mine an inch thick so I can still use the thickness scale less an inch. Saves measuring every time. Just sayin
  7. I was just curious. I’m always interested in things that don’t work correctly so I can find the cause and ultimately the solution. It’s always nice to have everything working as it should bbbuuuttt it’s even nicer to be able to fix it whenever it doesn’t. Just sayin
  8. So I have to ask the obvious elephant in the room question to MrsN who apparently had the same thing happen. What was the fix Just sayin
  9. Thanks Ray Gary
  10. Thanks for the welcome. Cost of the Mirka is high. The desire to continue woodworking was high. In order to continue , I wanted the best long term solution and the Mirka ticked all the appropriate boxes for my condition. Turns out, the cost compared to my health doesn’t even factor into the end results. No regrets. My scrolling is pretty basic. Silouettes, trivets and the likes. Not full time yet. Still doing so many other things. I’m always looking at the pics of what you regulars are doing and I am in aw of the time effort and dedication. I have a lot to learn and in doing so, I would not post a pic unless I thought it was worthy. But “hey” thanks for the encouragement. Gary
  11. Not tried the vac table-box idea. Instead, I invested in a Mirka sander. Age and bad habits have changed my life in the last two years dramatically when it comes to my shop activities. Masking up is now second nature except when sanding with the Mirka system. The initial investment hurt, but the results are exactly what they advertise and more. Easy to move around if you want to. You don’t have to use their vac. Any good quality vac will work. I’m pretty new but thought I would chime in on what works for me. Great forum by the way, always informative and interesting. Pretty new to scrolling, learning as I go and having fun doing so. Thanks to all.
