As a beginning scroll saw it's OK
PROS:
Compact
It has good weight to it.
The attached light is very bright.
It's somewhat quiet.
The round table makes turning small projects easy
The dust blower ( with bellows positioned correctly) works very good.
Can use both pinned and unpinned blades
It has variable speed
The rubber seals on the switches are a nice addition to the later models and are absolutely necessary
CONS
Blade tension is adjusted from the back of the machine
The table will rust if not waxed
Position of the power switch is convenient but the design can lend itself to finger or thumb smashing
Air bellows pump was not seated right from the factory
There is a tiny bit of side to side wobble in the blade
The access throat plate on the table sits a little lower than the table
Difficult to access the connecting rod in the back for lubrication
Other thoughts
I picked up my 1680 slightly used for 65 bucks. that's a pretty good starting price.
Even though the one i picked up had been used very little, there was a very lite dusting of saw dust inside of the switches, but they were very easy to take apart and clean.
Had to remove the blower line because it was not inserted correctly into the bellows and the bellows had been wedged incorrectly from the factory and could not move properly.
Its OK to start with Although after only cutting 9 layers im already thinking about something with less side to side arm movement.
