  1. I thought I would share my scroll saw blade holder with you. The photos shows the in it’s normal position and the second shows the holder close at hand and easy access to my blades.
  2. Loskoppie, What saw do you have and what are your problems, I can help with most things because in SA “ ‘n Boer mask ‘n plan” for out English speaking friends it means “A frame can make a plan” because where we are we think out of the box.
  3. Made a frame from pine, burnt it with a blow torch and then brushed it with a wire brush until I achieved the desired effect. Then applied sanding sealer and a clear coat of Matt varnish.
  4. Ray, You are very lucky and very Blessed to own so many high quality saws.
  5. In very detailed patterns like my Leopard some of the areas where are very, very small and difficult to see. I use a Dremel plunge router with the springs removed and added a small magnifying glass, available from model hobby shops the guys use them to paint models etc. It comes with a stand which I put into storage added a small bracket and now I can see perfectly. WAARNING please be careful keep your fingers under the one plunger i.e. I’m tight handed so I use my left hand for this. Then once it is placed on the pattern a slowly loosen the plunger setting knob, so the weight of the Dremel slides down under its own weight, it works like dream but you have tighten the router after drilling a couple of holes so that the holes are always vertical, once you got the hang of it is great. Hope you find this tip helpful.
  6. We can’t even get a decent selection of scroll saw blades, our supplier order 10000 blades pa, yip pa and they are not sizes I require to do fine detailed work. He does not know his market and we pay $6.85 per doz for $23.95 I can get 6 doz. Everything here is a total rip off, the scroll saw importers are continually out of stock of critical parts i.e. then tension rod and nuts, I’ve my spare to a friend of mine who works with steel every and he is going to make me a couple of spare. You just can rely on the importers. I’m going to import my own blades from Bearwood and they can send it to me express air Mail parcel post, will take few weeks to arrive, but I will get them.
  7. Hi, Barbara, the middle range saws i.e. Seyco (my dream saw) Pegasus, De Walt etc. is so expensive to import, because of courier cost and of course our governments import duty, which makes it just too expense for me anyway I’m a pensioner. I got a few quotes and and to import could cost us anything from R16000.00 - R35000.00 ($2850.00). I just can’t afford that expense. Secondly there’s no service so if it packs up you may as well throw it away. I read on another scroll saw group I belong to a guy a new saw ( not going to mention the name) it was delivered, it did not work, not to bother they replaced it a couple of days later and that did not work, so they replaced it again and believe it or not the third saw did not work, he asked for a refund and bought another brand which worked perfectly from day, so we would be in huge trouble if that happened to us.
  8. Hi Barbara, Scroll saws is a huge Problem in S A, we can get the Marlet (which I have) or the Ryobi all these types of scroll saws come out the same factory parts are all interchangeable, if you look at my post of the Leopard that was cut on my Marlet which I have modified, it’s vibration less, has a huge 500x500mm tabletop so your work piece is always on the table. I know where to get most stuff I do all my maintenance on my saw myself. Soyeh we can chat some how and see how we can help each other.
  9. Hi Don here, I see there is about 32 scroller staying in the Johannesburg, Gauteng area, would it be nice if we could through, WhatsApp, FB or Messenger, and share ideas help each other, discuss blades etc. We are so far away from all the good scrolling stuff that we have to keep thinking out the box. Please Nobody’s obligated if you think it’s a stupid, cool toss it in the bin, it’s just a thought.
  10. Thanks everyone, looking forward to the next cut.
  11. One change I made is because I have to sit when I scroll I found the stand too high, I’ve reduced the stand height to 25” plus the height of the Wen, it’s now very comfortable.
  12. My latest cut is the Russ Beard Leopard, this is my fifth cut, it took me about between 40-50 hours to cut, to time is not an issue. The pattern was cut on a highly modified Marlet Scroll Saw (your Wen) using 1/4” Prime Ply Grade B/BB. Used approximately 4 Doz Niqua #1 & 2 Blades ( not much choice where I live). Finished with Rustins Danish Oil, then two coats Medium Oak wood stain, and the a final coat of clear Matt varnish. The frame is going to be pine if I can find straight pieces most of our pine looks like gem clips, once the frame is made I want to burn it with a blow torch and brush it with a wire brush until I’ve got a true rustic Africa feel to it and apply sanding sealer and some Gloss Clear Varnish.
  13. I will post it here for you, had to make a slight adjustment, I found the stand height was a little, which lead to me sitting uncomfortably.
  14. In South Africa we are taught to always think outside the box, saying this I know there are Wen, Ryobi and plants more that has the same footprint. My Mechanical and Civil Engineer friend tells me that vibration is to understand the frequency, once you understand that you can solve the problem. So he designed a stand attached is the result, we achieved the same results when it was just standing unbolted on the Stan, but being bolted down was even better.
  15. Thanks Marg, I work slowly and take one cut at a time. Here in South Africa very, very limited choice of saws Marlet (Wen) & Ryobi Al 16” blade choice is a disaster. But us South Africans because we are so far away and a small scroll saw community (I think nobody knows) we are taught to think out the box. My Marlet has been modified by myself and is virtually vibration less.
  16. Thank you for your comments it’s truly appreciated. Busy with only my fifth cutting which should be finished tomorrow. Then the sanding and clean up starts.
  17. These are all Russ Beard Patterns except for Jesus Christ which is Botas Helder pattern, new scrolling and and just got cutting, learning all the time. Sorry my apologies the Shark I was given permission by Deane, can’t remember his full name my apologies.
  18. Hi CharlerlyL, Thanks for the feed back I realize now that the stand and saw combination is to high, I cut much better when the saw table was exactly 28” from floor level, so I’m going to lower that next week should take me a few hours. Because believe it or not my Marlet (your Wen) is all we can get in South Africa. As I mentioned in my original post there is no vibration what so ever on my saw due to the way the stand was made. I designed a stainless steel pin less adaptor for the saw and it works like a dream. I sit on a adjustable office chair and use a magnifying lamp fitted with high power LED’s. I have a fully equipped wood working workshop, my work shop area is 403 sq feet, so I’m not pushed for space. For us in SA to import a Seyco or Pegasus with courier fees and our heavy import duties would cost us around $2850.00 this becomes too expensive to consider.
  19. I have a question please, due to knee and back problems I can’t stand and scroll. I made a stand for Marlet Scroll Saw (your Wen, Ryobi, Record and a host of others), so I made a stand that was 20” high it was great but very unstable and it vibrated a bit. I asked Mechanical and Civil Engineer how do I build a solid stand that will reduce the vibration. He told understand the frequency and you can sort out the vibration so he sent me a design I built the stand it is rock solid and a glass of water does not even ripple through the speed process. I choose to build it 28” high and with the saw on top of that I am not feeling comfortable when cutting. So my question is what height of the stand be, looking at it I think I can reduced the height by at least 4-6”. I would appreciate some expert advice before I tear off and start making changes.
  20. Hi I stay in South Africa, the Land of the Big Five. I’m a 75 year old pensioner and have been scrolling for about a year ( not sure) just about to complete my fifth cut which is a Russ Beard Leopard, so I’m still learning. I enjoy reading and listening to music
