  1. Very Adorable! thanks for sharing
  2. I'd err on the side of caution and say no. I used to work for a shipping company and pallets are usually recycled, and don't always carry the same type of load each time, or at least the ones we saw didn't. There are so many other kinds of wood out there to be reclaimed that aren't as risky if you use a little imagination. For instance I'm going to be ripping apart an older Oak Entertainment Unit as soon as I get a new replacement for it. (I promised I'd never move the dang thing out of the house in 1 piece haha)
  3. HI Welcome!
  4. I started out with spiral blades as that was (gasp) recommended to me by the store my mom bought her saw from that I started on. I found it difficult to get precise cuts, and after some research moved to flat blade and would never go back! You can get all sorts of blades to change how fine/rough of a cut you need to make. As for the feathering, I start off with a very small hand finishing sander (one that goes side to side) then if I need to I use a nail file - the cheap very thin/flat kind, and have cut them to different widths for cuts. As well, I also do a final "sand" with a piece of brown paper just before I stain/paint my pieces to get the last little bits off. Hope that helps
  5. very nice work
  6. That is amazing!
  7. That looks fantastic, I love the choice of blue on it, makes the cutting pop!
  8. Great looking work! thanks for sharing
  9. I did a google image search in numerous ways. However, all I could find was one image that someone had made, I looked up the pattern makers and they don't seem to exist on the web anymore.
  10. The patern is not mine, it's from Steve Good. Unfortunatly I don't remember what post it was in, though I know it would be before the year 2010.
  11. I have a friend that has two boys who are very into football, and he wasn't sure what all to get them as they are 9 & 11, so I suprised him with these personalized clocks for him to give them for Christmas today. The pattern is a Steve Good one, but I made the names by using Microsoft word, and let me tell you, creating the names gave me more trouble then all the cutting LOL Edit.... oh my I am a horrible picture taker, please excuse the fuzziness haha
  12. LOL I think I'm probably younger than you (my son is 12 as a gauge) and I still have no idea who he is even after looking him up. Though looking him up lets me say that you have done a fantastic job at creating his portrait! I think who ever asked for that is going to be very happy.
  13. Almost forgot, Colouring Books... I've made a few things by just tweaking a picture so that I can use it on my saw. Strange but true!
  14. I have been collecting patterns for the 12 yrs that I have been doing scrolling, and have several hundred saved on my computer LOL. They are all either free patterns from the web, or collected from scroll saw books I've purchased or borrowed from the library, though I have purchased patterns that I couldn't resist. I've also gotten a number of patterns from stencil books, and Pumpkin carving sites at Halloween. And lastly I have a number of patterns that were from paper cutting as well as clip art that isn't copyrighted. Money has and still is a hurdle for me (as I'm sure it is for most) so I've done my best to search the web over the years for as many free patterns as I possibly could find. I usually get the bug and will spend a day or two just searching the web. I do love cutting, and a big reason I didn't enjoy selling was I don't want to keep making the same thing everytime. LOL when I feel the bug to be in my shop, I go to the computer, search out the patterns that interest me, print them out and head downstairs to my shop.
  15. Wow those are amazing! did you make those on a scroll saw or where they on a lathe?
  16. thanks for sharing Marg that is going to make someone very happy I bet
  17. Great job, I love the clean lines on the names. And I have to agree with all that box ribbon is fantastic!
  18. I love how you put the year on them What special memories for your grandchildren as they get older and see them each year
  19. I saw an ad today for the new Rockwell Blade Runner and was wondering if anyone has one, seen one, and/or has any thoughts. (https://www.rockwelltools.com/en-CA/BladeRunner-RK7321.aspx). I've been looking at the information Rockwell has on line and it looks like a jigsaw in operation, and looks like you could put a fence on it like a table saw. And most importantly its under $200 which is a make or break for me (as I'm sure it would be for anyone haha) I'm a single mom doing wood working and currently rely on my dad to help me cut my plywood into manageable chunks for me to work with, which means I have to buy the plywood with him, take it to his house and he cuts it on his table saw and brings it to my house. Currently I have him cut strips so that are 11 inches high and then I use my scroll saw to reduce the size to what I need to work with which can be quite awkard and time consuming. And I have the same issue with thicker peices of wood I might use for a base etc. I have a table saw, but to be honest I am scared of it and I think we all know you shouldn't operate tools you are scared of! I was thinking that maybe I could still have my strips cut but then use the Blade runner to make the peices managable and or use it for the bases that I cut out of thicker wood. Thanks ahead of time for you time reading this and any feed back Wendy
  20. For sure! I'm actually very excited about it. I have a little ornament that I'm going to experiment with first and if it works I have a project I want to make into a suncatcher to use it on
  21. I came accross this article on making "stained glass" for your projects (http://www.scrollsawer.com/step-by-step/creating-stained-glass-suncatchers.html) using Gallery Glass. I've got some on order and am going to give it a try and see how it works. Not sure if would be the look you are going for though.
  22. Fantastic article! And so timely for me as I've just started to venture in the world of painting some of my projects. I'd steadfastly refused to paint items because I felt it would ruin the art that is scroll sawing. I've booked marked this article for future refrence!
  23. When I first started scrolling, I didn't have much money (well lol I still don't) for wood. I live near several lumber yards and furniture makers, and my dad and I made the rounds and picked up all sorts of wood (sizes, grades, and type). Some of the wood was immediately usable for projects, the rest my dad (who is also a woodworker) cut, planed and laminated the wood into larger peices of various sizes. I love working with laminated wood (providing I remember not to immerse the end result in water based stain ....) as the the end results are always so unique. I have also used wood furniture that was beyond repair or just totally unwanted such as old desks, that my dad and I take apart. Old plaques once sanded down are also great. Old wooden frames are also great to recycle to help with display of my work. I have been scrolling for close to 12 yrs now and the only wood I've ever purchased was sheets of baltic birch which I used for my fret work. And people I give my work to, or the few that have purchased it love hearing that I've used "reclaimed" materials
  24. is the popular ply good for fret work? I normally use baltic birch, and have on occasion used oak (my dad had gotten some peices for free somewhere). I had a bad experience already when the grade they sold me wasn't what it turned out to be and it wound up splintering so badly I can only use that sheet for backings. I'm always looking for new wood to try and good prices of course
  25. Thanks Marg, I do tend to just do word of mouth, I'm happy to just have people pay me shipping costs and any money I do make goes right back into stuff for my shop. I find being in my shop such a stress relief, I actually picked it up to fight a bad case of post partum and was not allowed to spend time on my own so stayed at my parents house for hours each day and my mom had just bought a scroll saw.
