Two Truths & A Lie:

  1. Finished another intarsia piece. I am so glad that patterns are just suggestions!!! This pattern came from the SSWC #71. This is mostly poplar. The eye has some walnut & two other mystery woods. The lips are two separate mystery woods. Finished with one coat of shellac then topped with the beeswax butter! The Poplar is from the stuff I bought this spring and had cupped. The tips of the moon are on the cupped edge, but I thought it worked with the moon. I really liked the grey markings in the wood.
  2. Hot off the saw, err I mean sander, err I mean gluing - anyway its done. JRG parttern. Mahogany, Walnut, Butternut, and Aspen.
  3. Another build that my wife has claimed. This is Judy Gale Roberts "Barn Owl ornament" pattern that I enlarged to about 6" by 8 inches. Walnut, Butternut, Aspen, and mystery wood that I found in one of my scrap bins. The eyes are Butternut that I ebonized.
  4. Mule Deer. Butternut, Walnut, Basswood, Aspen, and Pine for the the antlers.
  5. A relative saw the original buckskin horse I had made, and asked me if I could make one white. She has owned a white horse for several years. So I changed the Butternut I used for the brown and used Aspen for hers. The eye, nose, and inner ear are Walnut that I ebonized. It was a pretty easy change and she is delighted with the result.
  6. Got an email yesterday - JGR has released an updated 2nd Edition of the book "Wildlife Intarsia" published by SSWC. Find information here on her site: https://intarsia.com/products/wildlife-intarsia-getting-started-book - it includes 4 new patterns that were not in the 1st edition looks like - a bear cub, a lion cub, wolf head, and the baby elephant that we did in last year's intermediate class. Site indicates first 50 orders from her site get Judy's autograph on the book. Info. on her site notes the following: "Getting Started" walks you through all the techniques involved in creating intarsia. The Book includes: 16 Total patterns with color photos for each. The price is $19.95, making each pattern about $1.25 ea. 5 Projects that will walk you through each step: Bald Eagle, Wild Mustang, Bull Moose, Elephant and Polar Bear. 11 Patterns including some instruction: Red Fox, Arctic Wolf, Bobcat, Buffalo, White-Tailed Deer, Jack Rabbit, Big Horn Ram, Raccoon, Wolf, Black Bear Cub and Lion Cub. Not affiliated but had gotten the email and thought I would share with the Intarsia enthusiast here. Haven't decided yet whether or not I will be getting. Probably. Need to see with patterns I already have first though. I love the Baby elephant we did which is now in the book.
  7. For those of you interested in taking one of Judy Gale Roberts Intarsia classes - she released her class schedule for 2018 yesterday (Aug. 15, 2017). She has cut back in the past couple of years on the number of classes that she is offering each year. They fill up pretty quickly too so if you are interested in attending one next year - do not wait too long to signup. I waited last year to sign up for this year's Advanced Classes (having taken her Beginners and Intermediate ones last year) and missed my opportunity to go this year so I jumped right on it yesterday and have signed up for the Advanced class next year. You do have to pay a deposit to sign up but its not the full cost and the final payment is due I think two weeks before the class begins. I know a couple of you are doing the Intermediate class this Fall - so if you sign up now for the Fall Advanced Class next year, you can be in class with me! a Win-win! Not affiliated - have just taken her classes and loved them. I do have the benefit of being close so no real travel plans for me and that helps on the expense but her classes are awesome and would encourage anyone who wants to learn intarsia or how to get more realistic images to try to make some of her classes.you can find the information on her website here: https://intarsia.com/collections/classes
