Which Dome clock is it???  Do you have a plan for your finish???  Not too early to think about that. May want to finish in sections. Do you have a place for it or are you selling???  They do take up some room. Look forward to seeing it done. Maybe a as build would be nice to follow along with. If i remember many years ago Fred Wilson (pop's Shop)did one and he did a as build and it was fun to watch. I think he is a member here. A mind is a terrible thing to waste :)

heres a pic of whats being built. I have the plans for the stand, but shall see in a while iffen I want to tackle it.

as for finish, im going to use clear lacquer. main construction is oak with walnut, maple, padauk, cedar, and who knows what other species for details. of course, wood choices may change as I go except for main construction.

I will be constructing in sections so it can be moved easier if necessary.

and its a personal project- something ive had the plans for for about 6-8 years.

Are you going to make 2 and put them together to make a complete tower. I think they suggest that in the plans.  :)  I would dip in blo before spraying with lacquer. Give it some color. Good luck and once you get started you will get it done faster than you think. there are stack cutting pieces so that helps alot.

I can say for sure that is way above my pay grade. I will look forward to watching you cut it.

Glad to see you got her under way.take your time ,take a deep breath everyday before starting as that's the only time there won't be dust in the air in the shop ,lol I've made simple flat clocks which took more time than i wanted to spend as they were to sell so i could eat.i knew just who would buy them so it worked out alright.Yes a work in progress would be peachy keen to follow.

When I built this one, I soon learned to keep clamping sections to an upright piece of 3/4" ply.  For some reason, it wanted to twist as it went higher.  Built mine as one solid piece.  Also constructed a carrying frame that had places to clamp onto the strong parts of the clock, while protecting the delicate parts.  IF it will be bolted to a pedestal, as ours is, make the top of the pedestal now (and the base of your clock) and drill your bolt holes.  You will thank yourself later.

Ours was given to one of our sons when he bought a townhouse, 120 miles from us.

Hope this helps Friend.

so, the front door on the 1st floor requires a 7" wide piece. i buy my lumber in 3/4" thickness, then rip in half kn the table saw and plane to thickness. however, i can only get 6" wide full cut on the table saw. soooo, what to do. welp, rip the lumber, then see how a sawzall does completing the cut. seemed to work pretty good.

i noticed on the 2nd floor there are 2 doors that are just about the same as the 1st floor door, just one side of the door not used, so im going to stack cut those 3. cut out everything on the right side and the door itself, then remove 2 and finish up the 1st floor door.

Are you planning on throwing in some accent pieces to break it up a little and have you gotten the clock motor yet??  If so start it to see it works well before you get to that point so in case you have to change it. See you are getting into it. I can tell. Be done before you know it. That clock was the original dome clock to start that era of clocks. It will look good when done for sure.

no plans yet of accent pieces, other than wood flooring inside and lighting.i will be using different species of wood on exterior accents. i have some ideas for thedome itself involving padauk.the railings will all be cedar.and the stairs...idk yet, but something other than oak.

but im sure ill be adding things as i go.

managed to get some more cuts done today. its been a while since ive spent this much time at the saw in 1 day- i think about 10 years ago when i built the workshop clock- and my back just aint what it was back then- a lil arthritis in my neck, surgery on the t6 vertabrae, and degenerative discs down in the L's- and its achin, so hangin it up for the day.

savin a bucket-o-cutouts and has me thinkin:

i should put a fireplace in this clock! :)

someone mentioned once i get going, i'll be motivated to keep goin(something to that effect).

they were right!

my mind wants to keep goin. my back says," hey bonehead!i need a break!"

theres a picture of another one of my fleet of my other hobby.no flights on this one yet. got the paint done last week.

Tom, My 2 cents worth again. I don't plan to do another clock, but if I did, I would omit the pattern for the clock insert and draw something to take it's place. When I ordered my clock motor, they sent 2. Turns out both were junk. Our son that owns the one I built doesn't even mess with it.
