New Guy Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 Are you going into the egg business or the chicken business, Large yard in the picture how many acres? Good job. Quote
LarryEA Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 I like your coop. And so will the chickens. Quote
gator Posted April 7, 2015 Author Report Posted April 7, 2015 no business per say just gonna raise some for eggs and meat and let the grand kids each have there own chicken ( we have 2 acres ) fish pond is on the list maybe just a small gold fish pond first always wanted a small pond with blue gill in it . got a great deal (free) on 70 Italian 12"x12" tiles, yes my chickens are gonna have a Italian tile floor . nothing but the best here on "Bend over acres" farm, Scrolling Steve 1 Quote
Multifasited Posted April 8, 2015 Report Posted April 8, 2015 You would be better served saving the tile for the pond ,IMHO Quote
gator Posted April 8, 2015 Author Report Posted April 8, 2015 gonna put tile so mites cant get in the wood floor gonna cover the tile with hay and change it as needed LarryEA 1 Quote
ChelCass Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Sigh! Chickens. I had chickens when I lived in Tenn. Have raised chickens off and on for 60+ years. I have found that a dirt floor works best for chickens. They like to scratch and its easier on their feet. I would use wood shaving and a bit of straw, then when I cleaned out the coop all the debris would go into a pile to age. The chickens would scratch thru it and help it to age. Chicken poop is very hot and will burn if not aged. I hope you put a cement or cement block in the ground around the frame of the coop. It helps keeps critters out. Especially raccoons, weasels, snakes and worse rats. What kind of chickens are you planning on getting? Our you going to get adult chickens or raise baby chicks? Quote
gator Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 got a friend gonna give me a bunch will see if that comes to pass then by if i have too. they have a fenced in yard on ground the coop is tiled ony Quote

Scrolling Steve Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 Hey Gator, you got that looking great! Quote
Multifasited Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 There AIN'T no faster way to find out how expensive chicken and eggs can be till you raise your own ! Goes for all animals even Goldfish ,But you have to experience that for your self ,all the fun and excitement soon passes away but BEND OVER FARM has a sole care taker 24-7 -365 ! Post again ,next year would love to hear the exciting tales of the adventure ! I really wish you the best of luck ! Quote
gator Posted April 10, 2015 Author Report Posted April 10, 2015 all true and vegetables are cheaper at store but walking through the yard eating fruit off my trees and raising my own hogs and making sausage and butchering my own meat the exercise i need the joy i get well its all worth it kind of like wood working. you can get cheaper from china but not the quality nor the joy from making it yourself Scrolling Steve 1 Quote
ChelCass Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 Raising animals is as expensive or cheap as you chose to make it. I had 50 chickens all layers (no meat chickens) I sold the eggs and this paid for their food. their eggs were far superior to even the Amish's eggs. Reason: I fed my chickens good quality food and also let them free roam. The yolks were a rich orange and very creamy tasting. I rarely got to eat my chickens eggs as they sold as fast as the chickens could lay them. I totally agree with there is nothing quite as satisfying as growing your own veggies, etc. For whatever reason they always taste better. You did a beautiful job on the chicken coop. My biggest problem was trying to keep straw in the nesting boxes and the snakes out............................ Quote
Scrolling Steve Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 Hey Gator, do you know why a chicken coop has two doors?.......................If it had four it would be a Sedan!! :) !!!!! ChelCass 1 Quote
