Fishman Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 (edited) I'm currently in the middle of trying to finish this project of the GGB and could use your opinions how how to finish it. For some reason I'm kind of stumped on this one, usually I already have the colors all planned out. I kind of like the unfinished wood look, but since it's the name. Would it be weird to leave it unpainted? I guess we don't have to paint every project the color they should be. What do you all think? Here are a few ideas I've had: 1. Leave the bridge unpainted and paint the backer with this orange/metallic paint I got. 2. Leave the bridge unpainted and paint the backer with another color. Maybe orange (sunset color)? 3. Another idea was to paint the bridge itself the orange/metallic color, and maybe paint the backer blue. My main concern is how does spray painting a fretwork type piece work out? I feel it would be hard to get nice coverage on the smaller inside cuts. I'm also open to suggestions! Thank you! Edited July 19, 2015 by Fishman Quote
rjR Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 First beautiful work and nice piece. My idea; and I am sure several will have different ones, is the bridge Black, above water line a Sunset backing with clouds and water line and below a darker version similar. You could also do a blues darker and lighter for waterline effect. I for one, DO WANT to see the finished version, regardless of what you decide! In the end do it the way you like! Quote

That sounds great, but I think I'm going to paint the whole backer a light blue tomorrow. Unless another idea comes along before tomorrow, that is little bit easier to do. Problem is I need to have it done and painted tomorrow, it needs to be quick. I think a solid color might be all I can do at this point. I kind of waited till the last minute. LarB 1 Quote
Smudger Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 Very nice piece, I think I would try a nice wood dye instead of paint Quote
jerry1939 Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 I work a lot with 1/4" oak. Small intricate cuts. Spray with Rust Olem clear enamel. I put on 6 LIGHT coats, each from a different direction. Get excellent coverage. Quote
jerry1939 Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 OOPS !! My picture didn't load. Will try this. jerry bobscroll 1 Quote
bobscroll Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 As Smudger said, I think contrasting wood stains, Very nice job on the cutting! Bob Quote
heppnerguy Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 If I had cut it, I would decide between painting the backer board black and leaving the other piece unpainted but I would probably spray a lacquer finish or other clear finish like mentioned byJerry or I would stain either the bridge piece with a little darner stain and glue together and finish as in my above suggestion or use a contrasting stain on the backer board and finish as in my first suggestion. One can also use food coloring to obtain a colorization that is allows the wood texture to show through, making it look more like a nature wood color.. the correct stain will let the wood grains stand out to and not look so painted over... There is my taking on this Dick heppnerguy Quote
wjbclocks1 Posted July 22, 2015 Report Posted July 22, 2015 I would suggest painting the bridge it's natural color. or a lighter Orange. and the outer ring as is Can't wait to see this finished. Quote
Fishman Posted July 22, 2015 Author Report Posted July 22, 2015 Hey guys, thanks for all your suggestions. Sorry I'm just getting back tot his, I had company over at the house. I was in a rush, and ended up just painting the backer a sky blue and finishing it with a few coats of Deft semi-gloss. Next time I won't wait till the last minute and I can finish it in a more complicated way. It came out looking good though! I wasn't able to take a picture of it all finished before giving it as a gift, but...it was the same blue I used for my dolphin box that people seemed to like....so just imagine this blue behind bridge. Also with semi-gloss finish. Quote
DWSUDEKUM Posted July 23, 2015 Report Posted July 23, 2015 Use water based acrylic paint and thin the paint until it is like milk. This will do two things. One - allow the grain to show a bit and Two - mute the colors a little so that when you put your top seal coat on the colors are what you might see at a distance. Great job on it. Looking forward to seeing it totally completed. DW Quote
