OutoftheWoodwork Posted August 12, 2015 Report Posted August 12, 2015 I'm putting this out here, because I'm hoping someone here can help me. I work with a young woman who is a single mom of 6. Yes, six children lol. Someone showed her a bunk bed for 5 on her fb. She in turn sent a picture of it to me, asking if I could build it. I told her I would see what I could do, that I needed pLans or dimensions, that i dont usually do furniture. After searching and finally finding out the source was fb, I look on his page and see he doesn't ship out and he's in AZ. I message him and explain the situation, and I understand he doesn't ship, but would he be willing to share or sell the plans, that I only want it to help this young lady out, that I do signs, and shared my fb page to prove it. I got the "I dont share" story. I told him thank you and (not so quietly) on my personal fb pg (not my woodworking pg) hoped Karma came and bit him in the @$$ for his selfishness. Today, I'm hoping a house falls on him... yes, I'm like that. I believe that if you have a talent, or skill, and someone needs help, if you can, you should help. It's called "charity" & "good will"... ANYWAY... If I post a picture, I was hoping someone could look at it and give me some sort of plans for it; I'm not a furniture builder, and even less of a designer/plan maker. The plans call for twin over full with a "bridge" that runs between the two sets that is also a twin bed. She is thinking doing just twin size beds because of lack of space, which would make it even easier I would think...? Scrolling Steve 1 Quote

oldhudson Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 I've made a set of bunk beds from plans in Woodsmith some years ago and a futon based on plans in Wood. I do some work for others but I didn't see any pic either. Beds worry me becasuse of the liability issues. It's one thing to make and install something like that and it's another to make it and send to another state and have a third party put it together. Still let's see what the picture looks like. Berry in St. Paul Paul, I said nothing about asking him to build and send; and I didnt ask him to, as I saw he didn't send. I asked him to be a good Samaritan and share or sell the plans so I could help out a single mom of 6. Edited August 13, 2015 by OutoftheWoodwork Quote
LarryEA Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 To build that one does require a bit of work. Taking a bit of Berry suggestion, I would find free plans for a bunk bed on-line (there are lots). Then build two and half of the plan. 1) looks like you need room size. Build it too big and it won't fit. 2) The picture you show, the beds are same plan, one mirror image with xtra bed in back. 3) Looks like top beds are for little kids.. (hope by the time it is built they haven't outgrown it.) Simpler plans...unless she has to have those bunkbeds. Good luck. Quote
amazingkevin Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 Two sets of bunk beds with two roll out's on each unit at the bottom house's 6 ! Quick an easy. Quote
kywoodmaster Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 (edited) Barb: I just did 2 sets of tripple bunks for my step daughter. It was a rush job so I didn't have a chance to do anything nice just 2x6 and 4x4 with osb board bottoms. Carriage bolts and 2x4 climbers at the foot. They are not pretty but functional. These were a 1 day project so nothing fancy. The diminsions on the mattresses were 38x80 dorm size. A regular twin mattress is 36x76. I am trying to attach a couple of rough pics. You need to check your avaliable space for the set you have posted. It looks like you would need a minium of 12 ft wide room to make that set work. If I can help in any way let me know Later Larry Edited August 13, 2015 by kywoodmaster Quote

Phantom Scroller Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 Simple construction dowels, fence post and boards, umm big though and lots of pieces. Needs loads of bolt fixings if it has to be taken down, other wise I'd biscuit joint screw and glue for all that bouncing the kids do and they will test it to destruction. Have fun Barb a lot of work. Keep us updated. Roly OutoftheWoodwork 1 Quote
DonR Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 I think that you could modify/combine some of these plans http://freebies.about.com/od/free-plans/tp/free-bunk-bed-plans.htm Don R Quote
oldhudson Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 I'm not at home right now. But I'm taking the red-eye back to St. Paul tonight. I'll be in touch. As someone pointed out the room size will be important info along with door openings and access to windows. Plus beds are usually sized based on the mattress sizes. In this case the two lower beds 'appear' to be "standard" single beds but the uppers are??? I know on the beds I made the first thing was to purchase the mattress. I'm pretty sure the corners are 4x4 and the rails are 2x8. There is no view of the ladder but I think it's at the far left. It would be interesting to see how that attaches. The distances between spindles/slats is important. I'm sure there is a code about the maximum distance. None of the joinery looks very involved but you know the old saying, "nothing is as easy as it looks." Just one more thought. Is there a Habitat for Hummanity office in the area that can help? I should be back on-line tomorrow mid day. Quote
