A friend of mine is near to completing this 5'6" walnut carving titled "Out Foxed." At the top of the piece there is a horse and rider and just to the right of center above the shelf is a fox hiding, thus the title. The whole thing was from one huge slab of walnut that he cut, glued, layered, and carved. His material cost was around $450. and he has approximately 200 hours into it, including his original design. He will put it up for sale when it is completed. I haven't decided if he is an inspiration to me, or if he makes me wonder "why bother?"

"WOW" !!!, stay on the good side of this friend of yours Joe. I can only imagine how much a person with this talent teach. Just totally awesome work. Priceless.

And he is rich in wood scraps, as his primary profession is as a cabinet maker.

I have sort of lost interest in carving, but dabbled in it for years. I tell people that if I took my best piece to a carving show, they would throw me out the back door. This looks like he could tie one hand behind his back, cover one eye and still turn out great work.

He deserves to have people bow to him.

Your friend has a rare tallent to produce such a superb work of art. May I suggest that you show photographs to a number of art dealers as this may have a far greater value than your friend may think and he should reap the benefit of his efforts.

In addition, he may receive commissions for other work if he wants it.
