GrampaJim Posted December 8, 2016 Report Posted December 8, 2016 I mentioned that I showed the first one to a friend and she wanted 4 of them for gifts. Just finished them. Since she is almost family, and I am still learning, I am almost giving them away. Everyone learns in different ways and for me, its repetition. So doing these these was good for me. Finished with a wipe on oil based poly. I noticed that the first one I made the poly on the white wood was yellowing, so I finished those parts on this batch with a water based poly. Any thoughts on that? amazingkevin, Kemaldo and MTCowpoke22 3 Quote

Roberta Moreton Posted December 9, 2016 Report Posted December 9, 2016 Oil based poly yellows. Always use water based varnish on wood you want to remain white. Especially intarsia pieces. I love the warm tones that poly gives a piece, best not used on woods that you want to keep the original color. amazingkevin 1 Quote

meflick Posted December 9, 2016 Report Posted December 9, 2016 (edited) Hi Jim, more excellent work. I have him cut out but haven't been able to do any real sanding in the workroom while my hubby was finishing my niece's wedding gift. Need to get out there and get to it now that he is done. When I took my class from Judy Gale Roberts, she told us she uses the following product from Old Masters Finish when she wants to try and keep her white wood white. You can order from her if in the US and cannot find it locally. http://intarsia.com/shop/hardware/old-masters-finish/ I also found it on Amazon here it looks like: https://www.amazon.com/Old-Masters-81008-Stain-Pickling/dp/B000I197Q4 This is what Judy says about it on her website: "Intarsia Whiting (Old Masters White Finish), is another gel finish we use when trying to keep white wood white. This whiting is the same basic formula as the regular clear, with a white pigment added. When you want to keep it white, just use this whiting for the first coat, the same as you would the clear."
