Intarsia isn't really my thing but Montserat's thread about Fred and Julie Byrne made me take a look at their website.  They have a few free patterns, one of which was this sleeping bear.  Since it is entirely made of pine, I thought I would give it a go.   I really enjoyed making it, and learned a lot in the process.  I don't know if I will attempt any more pieces but I will keep an eye out for a drum sander.

Nice job.  Great work for a first piece.  If you enjoyed it, you need to find more and try some more.  Several of the designers have some "Free patterns" to download.

Judy Gale Roberts has several on her site here: https://intarsia.com/pages/download-free-intarsia-patterns

Kathy Wise has one on her site here: https://store7626357.ecwid.com/#!/Lab-in-Doggy-Door-FREE-DOWNLOAD/p/64447678 but she also has several you can purchase and immediately download: https://store7626357.ecwid.com/#!/DOWNLOAD-Intarsia-PATTERNS/c/16241954

Garnet Hall also has a few on his site here: http://www.sawbird.com/free-patterns.html

When I got interested in Intarsia I looked for and worked with any "free patterns" I could find online.  Its a great way to learn the art without having to make the added investment in a ton of patterns all at once.  Finding and using JGR and KW Books with patterns also is a good way to get more for the $.

If you do Facebook, there are also a couple of Intarsia Facebook groups that have patterns available to download. Just check their "Files" section for the group.

Thanks for all those links Melanie.  I probably will try another pattern but don't have a ready source of different coloured hardwoods hence the appeal of the Teddybear done in pine.  I will keep an eye out for a drum sander though.  I'm sure that would make things easier.

very nice work

Thanks Brian.  I am always amazed at the intarsia work you, Trailfinder and others share on this forum so your comment is much appreciated.

Rob - if you don't have the ability to get different colored hardwoods - in my humble opinion, its okay to use stains to get the look/colors that you want.  A "purist" in Intarsia will only want to use actual wood with no stains or color added, but sometimes you got to do what you can do.  Sometimes, you are never going to find wood in a color you need and adaptation to what you can do is fine.  As long as you, the artist, is happy with your work then that is all that matters really.
