bandaideman Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 I have been working on selling and buying a house and about 3 months the sale of one house is over and after another several months of looking we will close on a house in a month if all goes well. The selling was a VA loan and a Nightmare. Anyway the house has a 2 car garage with separate doors and openers. one bay will be for care and washer dryer etc. the other is for a wood shop. I had a 2 car garage in the old house but the could only use maybe a quarter of it for wood working unless removing the car and moving machines around which I did for many years. Mama's laundry area was very dusty and needed a lot of time cleaning dust off etc, Now I would like to protect that so would like to put a partition between the two garage bays without having a permanent wall and something that could be closed when dust making and then open other times. I do have dust collection and do what I can but that fine stuff gets over on to the machines and wife not real happy. Any suggestions if you understand what I am trying to say would be appreciated. oldhudson Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 Without knowing the floor or type of rafters and height etc. - it's tough. But my instinct says, frame a 2 x 4 wall, 'rock' the laundry room side, and add a 2nd hand door to move to the more domestic side of the garage. There are advantages. With a wall you can hang shelving, or put in a rack to hold wood. It really will keep the dust and noise out. But you can always hang drop cloths from the rafters/joists. Quote
WayneMahler Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 My first thought was to build a wall. Finish the side for the car and the Mrs. A standard 2x4 framing and plaster board the car side. This way everything is sealed off and you won't have as much dust getting over there. Quote
bandaideman Posted October 29, 2017 Author Report Posted October 29, 2017 Thanks Berry and Wayne I had thought of the wall but was not sure I wanted a permanent structure however I did not think of the advantages you mentioned. The floor is concrete and the ceiling is sheet rock. Those are good things to know. It will be a while before we get a plan first get in and get the home set up the shop will have to wait but being able to have shelves and even if wanted a little more electric outlet may be possible. Lucky2 Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 Dan, how wide is the space you will have to span? Why couldn't you just use a cable, with some sort of heavy tarp hanging from it? As long as it reaches the ceiling and drapes to the floor, it should do everything you need to separate the two bays. Len Quote
bandaideman Posted October 30, 2017 Author Report Posted October 30, 2017 Thanks Len that was my first thought as well. I am not sure of the width. thanks. I am mainly thinking and getting ideas. Once I actually get in I will be able to be more exact with measuring and make some informed plans. Quote
Scrappile Posted October 30, 2017 Report Posted October 30, 2017 What Len suggests is what I did in my garage. I have a work area in there and when I was building a sail boat, I strung a cable across and hung a couple of those blue plastic tarps across. I did it mainly to heat my work area and not have to heat the would garage. I worked very well. You would have to get the cable strung as close to the ceiling as possible and maybe add some weights to the bottom of the tarp, like I did. but it would certainly help contain the dust. Quote
Rockytime Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 We have a two car garage. I partitioned off a 8'X14' room at the front and right side of the garage. My wife's car is in the left side. In the space between my shop and the garage door contains my table saw, band saw, an 8' work bench, 1"belt sander and a 4" band saw. I can roll the two saws out onto the driveway. It's all kinda tight but is works. Quote
amazingkevin Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Pictures would be nice, fellas. Quote
ChelCass Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 Depending on how tall you want your wall using those fold out doors might work. Build a frame attach the folding doors and you can open and close as needed. Quote
jbrowning Posted November 2, 2017 Report Posted November 2, 2017 If you build a wall separating them, how will the garage door open? I'm assuming it is only one garage door. We have a two car garage but with only one door that opens both sides of the garage. Hope this makes sense. Quote

In this particular instance - he notes in the first post that it is a 2 car garage with separate doors and openers. On 10/29/2017 at 5:56 PM, bandaideman said: . . . bandaideman Posted November 2, 2017 Author Report Posted November 2, 2017 Thanks Rockytime that was good input as Keven said a picture may be helpful. ChelCass thanks the inspection will be on Weds and I will be there for the 2-5 hours it will take and I can do measuring to see what is what. At the time I decided it was a good house to purchase after finishing the look see. There was the next showing coming into driveway so had to move quickly. It is a nice house on the market 24 hours and I was the first of 3 looking at it so no time to really take it all in. Each put in an offer I got it. Jbrowning looks like you got the answer has 2 separate doors. This is what I looked for so I could do something like this. Thanks everyone for the input and suggestions. Quote

bandaideman Posted November 3, 2017 Author Report Posted November 3, 2017 Thanks Rockytime Nice set up I have that space as well as area going out behind where your back wall is and there another room for more work bench equipment or storage. It is about 5x8 feet. probably won't get too much set up or done until Christmas or after but it is fun to think about. Can't get in until the 28th and of course the main house needs to be set up first. Everyone has had great tips. Thanks Quote
