Popular Post Old Joe Posted March 24, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted March 24, 2018 We had to leave our home of 40 years last year. Long story, but we moved to Frederick, MD and I was going to build a new shop in the backyard, but I found an Amish gent in PA that would build it and deliver it for barely more than it would cost me to do it myself. I ended up with a 12'x24' totally closed cell insulated building. The inside was bare and ugly with nothing but closed cell spray.I put in electric, walls, ceiling, loft, french cleats, dust collection, built benches, and even warmed it up with a few decorative touches.I finished making a stand for my jobsite tablesaw yesterdayI am trying to actually make stuff while finishing the buildout. munzieb, jbrowning, new2woodwrk and 7 others 9 1 Quote
Old Joe Posted March 24, 2018 Author Report Posted March 24, 2018 Top to bottom: #1:Outside of building. # 2;Before I had put in ceiling. I made the wooden vertical screw shelves. They are on French cleats I will be making several more of them.# 3: Ceiling finished and loft built. Left side is the scroll saw area. #4:Air tools on the right. Levels and squares to the left, along with most of my M18 Milwaukee tools. The 2 man saw was my great uncle's and he used it. #5: My just completed tablesaw station with side wings and outfeed.I can pull two pins and throw the saw in my truck. #6: I had made the miter saw station at my old shop.It also has side wings. All of the saws and shelves are on French cleats, as mostly everything is around the whole shop that isn't on peg boards or magnets #.7: Air tools, crappy bandsaw I got for $5 at a yard sale. The bench is a future stained glass station. #8 Last pic is a poster of my poison of choice. So, I am still unpacking things from various places. more clamps, stained glass supplies, refridge for the Dale's Pale Ale, and an through the wall mounted AC are all still to come. Also, I don't have water, though the shop is pretty close to the house. Overall, I am a pretty happy old man. Quote
meflick Posted March 24, 2018 Report Posted March 24, 2018 Congratulations on getting the building in and getting it started to be the shop of your dreams. Looking good and I can see why you would be happy. Old Joe 1 Quote
justdraftn Posted March 24, 2018 Report Posted March 24, 2018 Looks like a great place to create. I think I have as much fun creating stuff for my shop as I do creating boxes and cabinets. Old Joe 1 Quote
Dan Posted March 24, 2018 Report Posted March 24, 2018 Great man cave. A shop is never large enough with all those tools but you are doing a fine job with storage. But where's the fridge? Old Joe 1 Quote

We are just past having to worry about it here. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote

I make plenty of sawdust and kindling, believe me. I Get something done every day, but at the end of each day I try to take a few minutes to put everything in its place and vacuum the dust. I do a lot of staining, oiling, and lacquering. Dust is not my friend! Quote

Nik99 Posted April 4, 2018 Report Posted April 4, 2018 Nice shop.... exactly size Im wanting. Down here Im still unable to find anyone to build me one. So am considering a pre-made one I found which a nice Amich man makes as well! Much nicer than the pre-fabs I see on almost every corner on highway here for sale. Question... do you have a wooden floor? I was wanting cement foundation but the nice man who builds them I referenced earlier makes them with a wooden floor. Do you have any excess vibration when using your scroll saw? Had read it might be a problem. Second, I love your table saw cabinet with wings for your dewalt saw. Can you tell me if there are plans available to build that!?? Its exactly what I need to make. Thanks! Boy... you have a great shop... I will be sharing mine with garden tractor and recumbent trikes... but I figure we will get aling just fine!! Old Joe 1 Quote

Nik, I found the basic plan in Wood Magizine https://www.woodstore.net/category-s/229.htm I had to modify it a little for the fence to work for the Dewalt, but it wasn’t difficult. The plan fits a Bosch job site saw with no modifications. Also, the plan is designed to easily remove the saw and setup a router station, but though I haven’t set it up yet, I have a dedicated router table so I didn’t bother with that part. The cabinet allows me to quickly remove the saw when I need to use it as job site saw, but also makes it a safer, more accurate shop saw. Quote

I made a 6” deep gravel pad boxed in with pressure treated 4x6s bolted together and secured with 2’ rebar rods. In my city, if the shed is built on a gravel bed instead of a concrete slab it is considered a temporary structure and does not affect my property taxes. So, it saves money twice, as a concrete slab would’ve near doubled the overall cost. The floor is insulated and is built on 16” o.c. 2x4 s on 4x4 skids. I get virtually no vibration.
