Scrappile Posted May 4, 2018 Report Posted May 4, 2018 (edited) Went into my shop this afternoon to play, and wanted to get my can of Shellac out of the cupboard. This is what I found. Do not know why I didn't notice this a day or two ago, or even smell it. The can of Shellac had a little hole "pin hole" in the bottom of the can. It wasn't there when I used it a week ago. But must have started when I put it back in the shelf because it is pretty much dry. Anyway, It ran down the wall in back and ran out the front of the cupboard onto my Ridgid oscillating belt/drumb sander. I do not know how I will clean this up or if I even can. Looks like it may have gone down into the motor.... the sanding belt part is froze up... Not a tool I use often,,, but I did not want it to go this way. WayneMahler Posted May 4, 2018 Report Posted May 4, 2018 I feel your pain Paul. So sorry to hear all of this, maybe using solvent will help soften it ? The stuff I have in my shop is mixed with Denatured alcohol which dries really fast. Best of luck my friend . Quote
bandaideman Posted May 5, 2018 Report Posted May 5, 2018 been there Paul not shellac but BLO. The can some how was on its side. Could of been because I laid it on its side after making sure the cap was on tight. Well that was not so. I had it all over the cabinet, down the wall and on to bench. Fortunately not on to power tools but did fill up the case with drill bits, screw drivers etc. was cleaning up for a long time, Quote
jerry1939 Posted May 5, 2018 Report Posted May 5, 2018 Ouch! Sorry to see that. Ever notice that some days it seems that if weren't for bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all. For whatever reason, I always seem to take a "It could have been worse" attitude. It could have also _______________________ . Could have gone all over my disc/belt sander that I just finished restoring. It means more to me than this Ridgid sander. I am one of the very few people that does not like this Ridgid sander. I think the belt sander part of it is worthless, too small/short to really be of much use to me. I have kept it because of the drum sander part. I don't want to lose it, but if I can't get it cleaned up, at lease it is my least favorite tool that that may be lost. I think I can clean it up though. Already got it all apart and working on it. Just not what I wanted to be working on this weekend.... Quote
amazingkevin Posted May 5, 2018 Report Posted May 5, 2018 Always something. The more you have the more problems you'll have.Just be glad it wasn't worse. Quote
Sycamore67 Posted May 5, 2018 Report Posted May 5, 2018 This is a far to common occurrence with shellac. Quote

Scrappile Posted September 18, 2018 Author Report Posted September 18, 2018 Well pulled out my sander a couple days ago to use. Guess what, froze up tight. All it would do is hummmmm!! I figures what the heck, I didn't get it as clean as I thought I did.... doesn't work now so what have I go to loose. I tore it completely apart, broke the motor down as far as I could, and cleaned again. I had the motor out broke down and back together 4 times. Worked around 6 hours on it and walla,,,, got it going!! Been working for the past couple days... There was some shellac in the very bottom of the motor, around where the shaft came out of the motor, and extended down in to the little thing on the bottom that causes the sander to oscillate up and down. I just kept brushing alcohol on the shaft above the bottom piece bushing, until it finally broke loose. Once it broke free, I could push it down the shaft and clean the shaft real good. I think it is really fixed this time.... we will see. Maybe I should sell it while it is working!! GPscroller and meflick 2 Quote
