Sycamore67 Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 (edited) I made this box as a present. The box is made of Quarter Sawn Red Oak with Ash as the top, bottom, corner splines and vertical stripes. The top inlay is of Redheart and is the logo for EA Sports. The corners were mitered using a shooting plane to get the angles exact. Black leather was added for the inside bottom. The finish was a coat of white shellac to seal and then multiple coats of wipe on poly with light sanding with 400 grit between coats. The 1/4" and 1/8" thick wood was made by resawing and then sanding on a drum sander. Edited May 9, 2018 by Sycamore67 Fix spelling Dan, Jim Finn, meflick and 6 others 9 Quote
oldhudson Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 No idea what EA Sports might be but a super job on the box. I especially like how you softened the mitered corners. Inlay looks first rate! The lift off top is very neat too. You might post a bit more about making that. I've always wanted one of those drum sanders. Even used they exceed my budget. A really fine job. Quote
munzieb Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Very nice project. Inlay is great! Jim Finn 1 Quote
Sycamore67 Posted May 9, 2018 Author Report Posted May 9, 2018 EA Sports is a major producer of video games with such games as Madden NFL Football and many other very popular games. I do not at the games but they are a very successful company. I make the top by cutting the lid off on a band saw. I have tried cutting it off on the table saw but the bandsaw works better for me. I sand the cut edges on a sheet of sand paper glued to some tempered hard board being careful to sand evenly. I used 1/8" oak inside the box and mitered those corners with a shooting plane. Quote
meflick Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 What a stunningly beautiful box you have crafted Larry. Given the age of my son and his gaming hobby I know EA Sports as I have purchased many over the years for him. Whoever the recipient of this box is one lucky person. Your beautiful craftsmanship and fine skills are evident throughout. thanks for sharing it with us. Quote
