I am taking a break from the scroll saw for something different.

I traveled to Utah to learn to make a rocking chair.  I am learning from Bill Kappel who makes heirloom quality rocking chairs.  Mine is made of Claro Walnut.

He is an older gentleman who is a master at this and a great teacher who is helping me to struggle through the complicated joints.

I now know what dry heat is like.  +90 degrees and 10% humidity.

I have been working on my rocking chair and roughed out legs, seat, spindles, etc.

The seat is made from Claro Walnut and almost 2" thick to start.  The picture shows the seat carved out but needs a lot of sanding and a bit more shaping.  On the corners you can see the joints for the legs.  Lots of work to do and many hours of shaping, sanding and finishing.  I have one more day with Bill Kappel and then will ship the parts back for me to complete the chair.

If you are interested, you can find Bill Kappel's website here.

Wow, that is going to have a lot of time and love in it - the sanding and shaping alone - well I hope you are a patient person.  Thanks for sharing.  Look forward to seeing more as you progress.
