This is my first go at this JRG pattern.  Working on another one for some relatives.     Used Poplar, Alder, Redheart,  pine, and walnut.  Added some green paint for the birds feathers.

Do any of you experts find that you are not happy with the first build of a pattern and make changes the next time?   Every time I finish something, I see what I should have done differently.  Maybe its me, the slow learner. 😕

I think everybody, no matter the type of work you are doing, learn from the first one and find ways to change/improve your process the next time.  I am not sure though what you are unhappy with in this piece.  Looks excellent.  Thanks for sharing.

Jim,  I find that even the 10th time I make a particular pattern I find things that I would have done differently.  Its always a learning process, and when we stop trying to do things better, we stop growing,.

Your piece is really very nice especially being your first piece.

I am always playing with the designs, it is what makes the project ours.

I am curious what changes would you make?

There are some that I would and have made to this design.

Thanks

I changed the backer on the next one from pine to Red Oak.  Also, some of the shaping on the flower petals.

I found that as I went along with this art form I got much more aggressive with my shaping.  Shaping the leaves is one area and I would also shape the tail feathers.

Is the green paint iridescent?  It really pops!  For your interest I bought a set of iridescent powders at Fox Chapels last open house from a carving supplier. you take tiny pits of it and rub into the wood grain. You would probably like it.
