Frank Pellow Posted December 16, 2018 Report Posted December 16, 2018 (edited) Our next door neighbours recently purchased a cottage on a lake a couple of hours drive from Toronto. We decided that a sign or plaque would be the perfect gift for them and I came upon this (unattributed) sign on the internet: I printed this on "legal" size paper and used that as the pattern. As I cut, I made decisions on the fly about inserting bridges and not leaving weak peninsulas. Here is a photo taken part way through cutting (on 5mm thick) quarter-sawn white oak veneer: The majority of the sawing was done with a Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #3 blade but I reverted to a FD UR #2/0 blade for the TO OUR PLACE AT line. After completing the cutting, I simulated several backer boards to see which one Margaret and I preferred. Here are photos of the choices: We both opted for the brown backer (second from left). Now I need to mix some stain/paint that comes close enough to the green on the original that we both like it. Edited December 21, 2018 by Frank Pellow Fab4, barb.j.enders, meflick and 1 other 4 Quote

Scrappile Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 That is an awesome sign. Your neighbor is going to be so very pleased. Frank Pellow 1 Quote
Frank Pellow Posted December 17, 2018 Author Report Posted December 17, 2018 I've now removed the pattern from the foreground panel and the unpainted oak looks good. I'm tempted not to paint it, but that's the way I almost always feel before I apply paint or stain to wood. I will mull the decision over tonight and decide tomorrow morning. Fab4 1 Quote
spirithorse Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Fantastic job, Frank, I'm sure how ever you decide to finish it will be great. Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Frank Pellow 1 Quote
Frank Pellow Posted December 18, 2018 Author Report Posted December 18, 2018 (edited) OK, I decided to paint it. I'm happy with the weathered look. Next, I'm going to frame it with "rustic" looking wood. Edited December 18, 2018 by Frank Pellow Scrappile 1 Quote

spirithorse Posted December 18, 2018 Report Posted December 18, 2018 Hi, Frank, I thought for sure you would go with a Hunter Green but, it looks fantastic with your final choice. Well cut and easy to read with those colors. Also, I know from previous frames you have made that the frame will be yet another enhancement. Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Frank Pellow Posted December 21, 2018 Author Report Posted December 21, 2018 (edited) I made a "rustic" frame for this out of rough sawn pine and stained the frame approximately the same colour as the backer board. It's a simple Rosseter-Pellow frame held together with glue a screws. Here is a photo: I observe that it takes a lot of effort to make something new look old and weathered. Hope your still doing good and recovering well from your surgery. Thanks Melanie. I saw the surgeon who did my operation yesterday and he said that I can resume ALL activities. I am now walking and stranding for long periods with no pain. I am still more comfortable walking with a crutch than without and I am told that this is due to a muscle that needs to repair itself and that this might take as long as 6 months. meflick 1 Quote

Frank Pellow Posted December 26, 2018 Author Report Posted December 26, 2018 Well, Christmas Day has now come and gone and the gift has been given to our neighbours Jill and Jane, and they were more enthusiastic about it than I expected. All and all this has been a very satisfying project. Quote
