RDVawter Posted December 19, 2018 Report Posted December 19, 2018 Hi, I new here and hope that this is the appropriate place to ask this question. I'm looking for a pattern for a Christmas Reindeer that I saw in a store window. I have a picture taken through the window glass (so it's not great), and I'm hoping someone has seen this pattern somewhere before. If anyone knows where this pattern is available from I can purchase it directly, if not someone could possibly make one similar to it? Thanks, Ralph woodworker13403A, Jronn65, don watson and 2 others 5 Quote

Thanks, Ralph First, Welcome to the forum, I hope you become a regular. Do you have any sort of dimensions for it? Just one would help. Is it 3' tall, or 1' tall? How deep is it? Making all those buildings and trees etc would be a very big project. Or were you just wanting the deer pattern? Just the deer would be doable possibly if you have an idea of how big it is. How deep, tall, wide etc. Russell Quote
RDVawter Posted December 23, 2018 Author Report Posted December 23, 2018 Hi Russell, I went to see if this was still in the window, and managed to get some better pictures. I will attach those here. Dimensions are 27” to top of antlers, 17” wide at widest point, and 4 1/2” thick/deep. The deer is cut from 1/4” Baltic birch ply. I would like the entire pattern if that is possible, if not I will find something that works for the buildings, etc. i know there is at least one other person on the forum interested in this pattern, and I am quiet happy to share it. Thanks, Ralph Quote
Birchbark Posted December 23, 2018 Report Posted December 23, 2018 I'll see what i can do. Those are some much better photos. :) Russell Quote
worbler Posted December 23, 2018 Report Posted December 23, 2018 I've been fiddling with this also Russell. This is what I have come up with based on the one above. I'm not going to design the houses and stuff. There are plenty of ideas, and probably plans, on pinterest. This one also has no size dimensions, I don't go for that. It can be resized with something like PosteRazor. frankorona, don watson, Tomanydogs and 2 others 5 Quote
ChelCass Posted December 23, 2018 Report Posted December 23, 2018 Here's a second person who would be interested in a pattern. This would work perfect for a display in my bay window. Can't wait to see what our awesome pattern makers come up with. Thanks Ralph for making the request. Worbler I love your pattern I can make great use of it. thanks for posting it. Quote
Phantom Scroller Posted December 23, 2018 Report Posted December 23, 2018 It's a box on legs with sides on and I suppose you could make what you want tree etc for inside and top interesting would make a good project for next year.. Roly Quote
Popular Post Birchbark Posted December 24, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted December 24, 2018 (edited) I'm going to post the pieces as i make them, that way if anyone spots a problem we can fix it as we go. I made this on an 8.5 x 11 canvas, so you should be able to print it to scale. If anyone spots a problem, please tell me where it is. Birchbark Posted December 25, 2018 Report Posted December 25, 2018 Okay, the back is done, i hope this is gonna work. :) If anyone can see any problems, please let me know. I'm thinking the pieces will all print to actual size and the red lines can be used as register marks. If they do print to actual size, the brace pieces should be measured and notched from the drawing. Please let me know, before I go any further if this is going to work. I've also included an image of the full reindeer back. Some may want to use another program to make it full size. Any feedback is def welcome. RDVawter Posted December 26, 2018 Author Report Posted December 26, 2018 (edited) Hi Russell, It looks to me like it will work, but I don't have a lot of experience with working with patterns in this way. I did print all the pieces and it looks like they should go together as planned. What software do you use when printing, I seem to have trouble with printing to "actual" size on my computer. I finally used Paint 3D and it seemed to work. I would be nice to hear back from someone with more experience working with this sort of pattern for their opinion?> Hope you had a good Christmas, and didn't spend all your time on this. spirithorse Posted December 27, 2018 Report Posted December 27, 2018 Wow! That's certainly a lot of work, Russell, I certainly hope that RDVawter (Ralph) cuts this when it is completed and lets you see a photo of the finished project! If I understand your diagram correctly, each brace should be 4 1/2" wide through-out, correct? I'm probably going to save your finished project plans but, I don't know if I'll ever convince myself to buy that much plywood. I certainly admire your work on this for a new member to the site. I've become a little discouraged by the amount of time and effort myself and others have put into some requests never to see any finished results and often not even a thank you for the work. Not always on this forum but, all the forums that I visit. Although it's not for me, I, for one, appreciate your sharing this! God Bless! Spirithorse multitom, Birchbark and ChelCass 2 1 Quote

Thanks, Ralph I had a very nice Christmas Ralph, thanks, spent it at my daughters, most of the family was there. I have Firefox as my browser, and can print directly from there. I keep clicking the image until it is in its own window and at full size, then "Open Menu" in the upper right hand corner of the window. Click on the three little bars, it opens a drop down menu, i choose 'Print'. Another window opens and i choose 'Shrink to Fit'. Then print. But i should say, that is how i WOULD do it, if i had any ink in my printer, which i don't. If you think this is going to work, I'll continue with the pattern. It's a lot of work, but if you can, and will, use it, i will continue. Russell Quote

Spirithorse Thank you Spirithorse, I know it is a new member, i give everyone a chance. Assuming the best. But i do have a list, I check the list before i make a pattern request, if there was no Thank You, or credit given to the pattern maker, or no picture posted, on the last pattern i made them, then i pass and let someone else help them. There are many talented pattern makers on this site. I don't make as many as i used to, since google doesn't crawl this site anymore, and my pictures/patterns don't show up in a search like they used to. But it's still fun to make a few requests, and this one seemed like a challenge, so I'm gonna try and help. Russell multitom 1 Quote

I am using Chrome right now. I will definitely be using the pattern, and will post the finish product. I just ordered cartridges for my printers today, so I’ll be good to go. I appreciate your work on this, as I have been looking for a pattern for this for a while with no luck. Thanks, Ralph Birchbark 1 Quote

Scrappile Posted December 27, 2018 Report Posted December 27, 2018 Hummmm. I tried to print the patterns. It looks to me that if you tell it to print at 100% scale, it won't fit on 8 1/2" x 11 paper. It you select "shrink to fit" it is around 73% size. It appears it would need to be printed a 100%. That was the only way I could get the Braces to actually print at the correct size, but not all the antler would fit on the page. When I get some time, I an going to try to convert the patterns to .pdf files and then I can print them as "poster" and paste them together. ChelCass and WayneMahler 2 Quote

Thank you for the input, the antlers would need to be printed in "landscape" mode i am thinking. They are wider than tall, but still less than 11" wide x 8.5" . IDK. I'm hoping these can be used. And that it all goes together once done, of course. Thanks again for the feedback. Russell Quote
Scrappile Posted December 27, 2018 Report Posted December 27, 2018 (edited) Okay, I tried the head and antlers again, at "Scale to Fit" setting. And they look to be very close. I think what is different is before I printed it at "Scale" and the scale was set at 73%, that may be a hair different than what "Scale to Fit" may work out at. Anyway. that portion seem very close and would work, may need a little filling here and there, but that will have to be done anyway because as yet I can not cut perfect with the scroll saw.... I really want to try making this sometime this year, but it will take me some time. I want to look into the scene and the house, people etc and figure out how I would do them. It I can figure that out and got this done I think it would be awesome, with some lights in it. I'm figuring the reindeer would work with 1/4" BB, do you agree? I had hoped so. Setting it to scale at 73% would make it smaller probably. Glad you got that worked out for us. It looks like if someone wanted to make it bigger, they could print it at 200% and it would break it down into two pages to print. That's what it looked like to me anyway. IDK. Either way, glad you got that figured out. Yes, I was thinking 1/4" BB, the sizes of the braces in the pattern are made at 1/4", that, of course, isn't the actual thickness of the BB, so some adjustment will need to be made there. Once you try cutting out the slots, and I would cut on the inside of the lines, then you'll know how to adjust each cut I'm thinking. 5 hours ago, WayneMahler said: Seems a lot of us a great interest in this. I'm glad you're on board Wayne! I figured I'd have to wait a bit to see this one cut, it is a big project for sure. Can't wait to see it tho. Here are the front cutout pieces. They should fit right up to the Reindeer Back Pattern, front and back are the same. Just line up the red horizontal lines. If anyone can see a problem, let me know so maybe we can fix it now. Popular Post RDVawter Posted December 29, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted December 29, 2018 Hi Russell, I started on this project today. Got the back printed, taped together and transferred to 1/4” Birch plywood. Stacked two layers of plywood and cut it out. Still need the interior penetrations cut out and a little bit of cleanup on the edges. Then cut out the scenic area on one layer only for the back. Looking good so far, Thanks, Ralph meflick, ChelCass, don watson and 7 others 9 1 Quote
