Popular Post munzieb Posted February 15, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted February 15, 2019 Got another request from my wife to make another Box Joint Box she could paint. She wanted it to have a high gloss black lacquer finish (almost piano like) I got the joint box and dome pretty well down pat. She also wanted a drawer. (first for me) It's 8x10 1/2" poplar. There are at least 10 coats of black lacquer and I wet sanded with 320 grit most of the coats. It's amazing how fast lacquer dries! It took me a few days to get the box ready and just a day (with drying ) to have her amazing painting done. I'm loving that high gloss look and the flowers! meflick Posted February 15, 2019 Report Posted February 15, 2019 Quite the team you two make. Another beautifully done box. I like the addition of the drawer as well. The black lacquer adds to its beauty. You need to see what other great ideas she has for you. MarieC and munzieb 2 Quote

munzieb Posted February 16, 2019 Author Report Posted February 16, 2019 (edited) Thanks all, I did use a scroll saw to cut the face of the drawer. Before gluing the sides of the box, I laid out the size of the draw, drill a very small hole and cut as straight as possible the outline of the drawer face. I couldn't do much sanding after the cut or it would not have been a tight fit. I datoed the base for a 1/4" base and a 1/8" frame above the drawer and I cut out the center with a 1/4" lip to give me room to make adjustments and fit for the frame of the drawer. I made a drop in for the dividers and covered with felt. Each one has been a learning process and they get faster each time. I'm back to scrolling again. Beach, lighthouse design I worked on and a B-25 for my B-I-L. His dad flew one. Still gobbling pixels on that one for now. FYI, The lacquer has a tendency to stick between the top and base. A little paste wax can prevent that from happening. Edited February 16, 2019 by munzieb Extra info meflick 1 Quote

JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted February 17, 2019 Report Posted February 17, 2019 Man there is an example of two great artisans. Job well done all the way around. I wish I could paint like that. Black lacquer is tough product to work with and get a good looking finish. Thanks for showing. munzieb 1 Quote

Thanks Don, I've done several other boxes since then and learned something new each time. My wife's paint job on this one is still my favorite. Quote
