Charlie E Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 So happy to be finished with this project. My wife found this method of fake shiplap and I was against it but it turned out pretty good. I cut 20 sheets of 1/4 luan into 160 6" planks. Lots and lots of sanding and priming. We had old fashioned, ugly, cheap paneling so this is a welcome change. jollyred Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 I did a little of that on our attic stairway, but that was nothing compared to what you did here. Charlie E 1 Quote
don in brooklin on Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 That looks fantastic. Did you put any space between planks? Did you round edges? My wife would like to do this as an accent wall and I have been putting it off. In my previous house, I did a rec room in 3/4 inch MDF. Did it as bead board so it took 4 passes on the router so I vowed never again but this looks like a great idea. Charlie E 1 Quote

I think nickels are the most common spacers but we had old vertical paneling under most of it and didn't want the old lines to be visible through the spacing. I also left a slightly smaller space where the ends of the planks meet. I used 2 thicknesses of Xray film for that but started eyeballing that before I was finished. I didn't round the edges, intentionally anyway. I spent about a day and a half sanding the planks with my orbital sander to remove fuzzies on the edges. I cut the planks about 5 7/8" so I could get 8 out of each sheet. We had done an accent wall in another room and used tongue in groove for that but this was much cheaper since we were doing so much and a lot easier to deal with around door casings since it is only 1/4" added thickness.
