I built the workbench in the first couple of shots around 1982. I'm pretty sure I got plans from Popular Mechanics or something like that. The top was a butcher block top I purchased whole. It's supported by steel legs and the cabinet is made from 1/8 Masonite.  I added the vice, holes and hold downs over time. It's served me well but I wanted more flexibility.  For quite a while lusted after the Festool mft (multi-function table). But those things cost $600. I finally decided I'd make one using idea gathered from watching YouTube videos of others who've made them. (Approx. Money Spent: stock about $10; clamps about $150; bench cookies $60; bushing and drill bit$40)

Mine has 3/4" dog holes, not the 20mm that are so popular. It's about 1/4 sheet of mdf. I was VERY CAREFUL laying out the table and use a bushing so the hole were as vertical as I could make them.  I've added 6 holes with rosen inserts so I can screw on Rockler Bench Cookies and lifts. The dog holes are 4" on center. The two advantages I was looking for was a bench that was portable. I can toss this in the car with clamps and track saw and be able to get a lot done. And it's much more flexible for clamping that a conventional set-up. When not in use it simply hangs on the wall in the shop.

For me it's a two sided bench. The top is for assembly and if I turn it over I'll use the bottom for cutting.

Thanks for looking. If there any questions (about the project) I'll be happy to answer them.

Lucky you to follow thru with your dreams. Every now and then I see the table of my dreams and  sigh. It rotates with all my machines in there own position.

Most of the SSV members spend a lot of time in their shops, like you. And we owe it to ourselves to make that time as pleasant and efficient as we can. So if you spend a couple hours making a unit to hold your sand paper in a neat organized manner (or a cabinet for tools, or a workbench modification, or new dust collector, or sweep the floor). I consider this time well spent. As an aside, how are you feeling these days?

At least your still going, that is a HUGE plus. I know it is a challenge some days to get into the wood shop. I am pretty sure your like me and refuse to let medical conditions from taking over. Just keep plugging away and wishing you the best.
