i am not sure I understand this exactly. Are you saying the kids are cut into the wood, rather than glued on? So did you route it out with a dremel used as your router? Just wondering because I have been thinking of doing that  with my Dremel also.

That's right, first I cut the shape with the scroll saw machine.
Then I carved the surface with the dremel.
I glued the figure protruding a few inches.
