Badgerboy Posted May 30, 2020 Report Posted May 30, 2020 I am cutting an Alex Fox design and as you can imagine it has a good deal of minute detail. I am cutting on 1/8" BB ply covered with self adhesive clear shelf liner to which I spray glued the pattern. To my dismay after finishing a layer of the design and removing the liner/pattern I found the liner adhesive pulled up some of the BB grain fiber leaving a substandard surface. Sadly I do not think I can sand it flat-smooth again without damaging the piece. I am wondering if anyone has some wisdom to share on how to eliminate this problem. All my layers all ready prepped for cutting. I am pondering warming the pattern/liner with a hair dryer to see if that helps minimize or stop the grain pull. Has anyone tried this? Any other recommendations? Your comments are appreciated. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
CATRK Posted May 30, 2020 Report Posted May 30, 2020 Yeah, you're on the right track. I use a heat gun and gently peel the pattern back. Sometimes there's a little glue residue, but that sands off easily enough. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

kmmcrafts Posted May 30, 2020 Report Posted May 30, 2020 I've not had too much of a problem with this YET.. I use a lot of BB ply.. but that said.. I don't normally leave the shelf liner on more than a few hours.. But one time I left it on a few days and had this same issue.. heat from hair dryer and heat gun worked well.. just make sure you keep it warm enough but not so hot to melt it.. that creates a bigger problem.. It seems the liner has to have the right temp to peel off good when this happens.. Thankfully I start my projects in the AM and finish it all by PM most times so I've not had problems.. Also if the BB ply is been sitting around a long time and had been exposed to higher humidity etc.. it seems to be more prone to lifting the fibers.. I always pre sand my projects down to around 320 grit.. That helps tremendously. If I have a project that's going to take some time.. ( back burner projects for fun rather than orders ) I sometimes with go with the painters tape instead of the shelf liner.. The tape can stay on for longer periods that the liner can in my experience.. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Guess these will get paint vs natural OCtoolguy 1 Quote

I've not had any problem and I've left it on for weeks at a time. I use a combination of shelf liner (Walmart) and the shipping labels on top. Always comes off clean. tomsteve 1 Quote

Hmm, does the MS really penetrate the liner? I do that when I glue the pattern right to the BB. I will give it a try. Thanks! OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Thanks! It doesn’t penetrate the liner, but gets under it from the edges. It will take a couple of minutes, but it works well. I don’t use shelf liner but I do apply clear packing tape on top of the pattern. If the pattern doesn’t come off easily with heat, I spray M.S. from a spray bottle onto the tape. The M.S. soaks in under the tape.after a few minutes, it just lifts off! OCtoolguy and tomsteve 1 1 Quote
John B Posted May 31, 2020 Report Posted May 31, 2020 Perhaps you could do it the same way I remove laminate. Lift a corner and placing the Turps, Thinners, Mineral Spirits in a sauce bottle, just dribble a little between the liner and timber. Wilson142, munzieb, tomsteve and 1 other 3 1 Quote
ike Posted June 8, 2020 Report Posted June 8, 2020 I had a pattern glued to BBfor about a month and I used MS to remove it . It came off but it took several soakings with MS to do it and it didn't heart the BB any . IKE Quote

Wilson142 Posted June 8, 2020 Report Posted June 8, 2020 I've left the liner on for as long as 3 months with little problems. I rarely use 1/8 BB but find the more fine detail the less problem I have removing the liner. When I'm feeling paranoid I do use the dryer sometimes. Quote
