Popular Post JimErn Posted June 6, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted June 6, 2020 so we had, or I should say the wife had, several tubs and planters that she was "farming." That means moving them into and out of the sun, and into the deck at night to keep the deer from eating it all. Then she says, You know if I were to have an area for the farming, it would mean less work. So I screwed some 2x12's together to make an 8x7ft box, and filled it with 59 of these bags of top soil, plus some garden mulch and fertilizer. 59 bags at 40# each is .... a major PITA then to keep the Deer and black buck antelope out of the "farm" I put up a 10ft square by 6 ft high cage - and ran the water line to the cage. All that is left to do is run drip watering and of course ..... Now she says, you know a net roof would really make this great. sigh. Oges, amazingkevin, nickp and 7 others 7 3 Quote
kmmcrafts Posted June 6, 2020 Report Posted June 6, 2020 Looks great Jim.. I need to do the same.. we put in about double that size of raised bed gardens.. and the critters have ate one of the jalapeno plants.. actually bit off the leaves and then I guess didn't like them so they spit it out and left.. I put up a makeshift chicken wire fence that'll be used for the year.. but maybe later summer / fall or next spring, LOL I need to just fence the whole area in with a nice fence.. Quote
hotshot Posted June 6, 2020 Report Posted June 6, 2020 (edited) For me, it was the daughters idea. She just graduated college and is back home, and had this idea, so we did 4' * 24' bed so we could reach everything without getting in it. Totally jealous of your fence, that would be nice. We put out scat pads and a lot of upward facing wires to help keep out the varmints. Nothing eaten so far. Edited June 6, 2020 by hotshot amazingkevin, meflick and danny 3 Quote
John B Posted June 7, 2020 Report Posted June 7, 2020 (edited) You've started now Jim, there will be no let up I can feel for you. I bought a cube of woodchips the other day and after shovelling them of the ute and spreading, my back definitely new it had had a workout. Edited June 8, 2020 by John B danny 1 Quote
JimErn Posted June 7, 2020 Author Report Posted June 7, 2020 @hotshot I like the idea of a narrower planting bed, I suggested a horseshoe type arrangement but she said one big planting bed was what she wanted - easier for me. @John B Yea, Buying the pallet of bags of soil was the easy part, then unloading one at a time and cutting it open, emptying it, doing it again and again - sheez! 2,360 pounds of soil out of the 2,400 bought - and the heat just kept increasing as the day wore on. dgman Posted June 7, 2020 Report Posted June 7, 2020 A lot of work Jim, but the end result looks great. Tell us what she planted. Quote
meflick Posted June 7, 2020 Report Posted June 7, 2020 Happy wife, happy life I think she was happy Quote
Woodmaster1 Posted June 8, 2020 Report Posted June 8, 2020 I been going to make a raised garden for last five years. I use the excuse of it's in the planning stage. It worked on the kitchen cabinets for 3 1/2 years until she reminded me that I have acquired a bunch of tools now it's time to use them. I am hoping to get 1 more year before making raised gardens. nickp Posted June 8, 2020 Report Posted June 8, 2020 Nice job on the ever-increasing scope of the "honey-do" items... You don't know it but you just put me over the line on what to do with a 40x16 fenced in area the previous owner used for his German Shepherd...I kept looking at it and thought "what a beautiful spot to put a garden"... Yup, you guessed it...gonna tear the fence down, get rid of the gravel and seed it for the mower...(that is, hire somebody to do it) Garden looks good...drip line is a great idea...enjoy the harvest... The only issue I see with that is... every year going by is that much older you'll be when she gets more demanding of getting it done.. Gotta admit though.. I've used the excuse that I have a lot of custom orders I'm working on.. LOL Setting behind my scroll saw is way more fun the working out in the hot sun doing this type of work, LOL.. another plus to doing this for money, LOL Quote
Fedido Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 I feel your pain! It seems that in the time it takes to finish one project, she wants three more done and all better. Quote
