RabidAlien Posted June 10, 2020 Report Posted June 10, 2020 Yeah, not the software version. Found a couple of interesting old windows at a going-out-of-business sale put on by a demolition company last weekend. Based on the prices they were asking for salvage stuff, I can see why they were in trouble. We were able to get two windows for a fairly decent price, though, after some haggling. My wife took the 9-pane window and did some glass-bead pattern work. I looked at this one and immediately thought "flag". Flag is painted on generic 1/4" ply, stained Minwax Grey for the antique look through the cracks. I "aged" the paint by liberally covering the stained ply with wood glue, then painting the flag once a thin skin had formed over the top of the glue. I may have started a bit early, as the white star was the first thing painted and it didnt' really crack much, but the red and blue did nicely. The paint sample I had was apparently latex, it tends to split in strips instead of small pebbly chunks (think of ice floes breaking up on a lake in spring) that chalk paint would break into, but samples are $4 a pop at Lowes vs $15 for chalk paint. I'm happy with how it turned out, anyway. Going to look for some antique hinges to use to hang it, may resort to running a wire behind it and hanging it like a picture if I can't find any decent hinges. jollyred, Jim McDonald and meflick 3 Quote
dgman Posted June 10, 2020 Report Posted June 10, 2020 Looks great Kirk! You do need to be careful as that flaking paint is probably loaded with lead. You might want to seal it so it doesn’t flake off. RabidAlien 1 Quote
RabidAlien Posted June 10, 2020 Author Report Posted June 10, 2020 That's next on my list. We're also thinking about hanging it outside. Quote
