Dave Monk Posted August 11, 2020 Report Posted August 11, 2020 My sister in law asked me to make a starfish for her. Any suggestions on giving it texture would be appreciated. Quote
spirithorse Posted August 11, 2020 Report Posted August 11, 2020 (edited) Hi, Dave, A couple of techniques come to mind. You could definitely use a rotary tool like a dremel and let your imagination go wild. Another technique that I think would be splendid for this project is shown in this YouTube video. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=heated+sand+for+texture+in+woodworking&docid=608021215743182588&mid=C1C31C21E6D47A63AC03C1C31C21E6D47A63AC03&view=detail&FORM=VIRE Looking forward to seeing your finished project! God Bless! Spirithorse There is another alternative that I decided NOT to share originally but, on afterthought, thought I might as well pass this idea along also. I have seen projects where the wood worker heats sand in a skillet or frying pan and then inserts the project into the hot sand. Due to the texture of the sand, it will make unique scorch marks on the wood and you can continue to heat the sand and insert the wood project until you get your desired finish. God Bless! Spirithorse Dave, if you use the above method, you probably shouldn't use your wife's favorite skillet! Sounds like a neat method though. Dave Monk 1 Quote

Spirithorse I watched the video and was impressed with the result. That technique provided a somewhat rough finish and seemed fairly easy to control during application. I wonder if the sand will stay on permanently or will tend to fall off eventually. Edited August 12, 2020 by jvbscroller Quote
