Hi everyone, my Granddaughter asked me if I could make this for her. The name will be (NOVA). I thought a 8 inch circle would be fine. She wants the backer to be yellow and the front to be pink. I thought I would do the leaves green . Not sure what to do with the Owl.Maybe just make that yellow like the letters. Any ideas. Thanks, Ralph

That should be easy enough without a pattern Ralph.  Find a font you like and just cut out the letters, look for an owl silhouette on the internet and away you go. All you need is a printer.  🙂  If you are going to paint it then use mdf.

Hi Brenda, I don't want to cut each letter and have to glue them on. I want to cut them right out of the wood and put a backer board on it.

Sorry Ralph, I totally misunderstood you. These 'Rounds' are incredibly popular amongst the ladies but they are all made with the name and pictures glued on.

Yea Brenda, that was just a sample picture that my granddaughter sent me. I've done plaques for her before with the letters cut out and a backer board on the back. She seems to like that look.

Thanks TD, that looks good to. Yours looks like it might be a little easier to cut. I like Brenda's to so I'll print them both out and see what happens. Thanks again.

SORRY about this TD but the baby is AVA JANE. Could you make the change to AVA JANE over 2 lines or just make a new pattern with AVA. Please yourself I am just happy to have a Grand Daughter. Thanks again.

Don W

EDIT That should be Great Grand Daughter, I seem to have lost the plot here. She is the most beautiful baby I have ever seen.

Can I just ask about the painting. I was thinking of painting with Acrylic paint and wanted to know if the wood needs sealed first with sanding sealer/varnish, or is it ok to paint first and then seal with a coat of spray varnish (matte or gloss) ??

take care and stay safe

I've been told that with Acrylics you are better sealing it first. Acrylics are waterbased and without a sealer it soaks into the wood, it also can bleed.

I use a spray varnish.

If usually seal with a Sanding Sealer first.  I have been using 60/40 alcohol shellac as I can't find wax free Zinser sanding sealer since lockdown.

I dip the piece. shake and let dry.  I then quickly sand with either my mac mop or by hand and the surface real smooth.
