new2woodwrk Posted September 4, 2020 Report Posted September 4, 2020 I did a bunch of cuts this week. The cuts came out OK but the staining, not so good I won't be staining these anymore and will be trying the Mineral Oil bath thing. No clue what happened to the Poodle and the Penguin, but boy did they come out crappy - samples only now I guess. Leo and Papillon came out fair The Manatee came out the best I think - the only one I didn't stain... I did a bunch of framed cuts also, I'll post once their mounted and finished Thanks as always in advance for reading danny, Dave Monk, GusGustin and 3 others 6 Quote
meflick Posted September 4, 2020 Report Posted September 4, 2020 What kind of wood were you using? Some wood just doesn't take stains very well. Cuttings look good. new2woodwrk 1 Quote
rjR Posted September 4, 2020 Report Posted September 4, 2020 Very nice work.. Sometimes the torch effect works better than any stains will. Then just a light spray poly over it. new2woodwrk 1 Quote

Cuttings look good. All except the Penguin were poplar. The Penguin I think was a left over piece i had from when I started - probably a Lowes Common piece or might have been pallet wood - not really sure about that one. Quote
jollyred Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 The way the stain soaked into the end grain on the cut lines makes it look like they had a finish applied before staining. Tom new2woodwrk 1 Quote
Tomanydogs Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Nice work on all of these. Sorry about the staining on some of them. new2woodwrk 1 Quote

Tom Thanks Tom, I only used pre-stain on the poodle. The Penguin was broke in several pieces and glued back together and then pre-stained. Quote
amazingkevin Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Make lemonade out of lemons! Add something as a distraction to move the eye toward the good parts. Not that glitter would work for these but glitter definitely hid all my mistakes when making names.you,LL figure it out, maybe re stain ? new2woodwrk 1 Quote
