barb.j.enders Posted October 31, 2020 Report Posted October 31, 2020 Here is what I hope to work on over the winter! Both are mandalas. One is 7 layers. The other is 6. Patterns are now all glued up! That was pretty nerve wracking!!! Plan is to stack cut at least 3 layers of 1/8" bb ply. Might do 4. Some thoughts have been to stain the wood first. I realize that the edges wouldn't be coloured agter cutting but it is only 1/8 thick. Hope to start soon. RabidAlien, don watson and amazingkevin 3 Quote
Foxfold Posted November 1, 2020 Report Posted November 1, 2020 Oh Wow ! That's a project and a half isn't it. I'm sure you'll make a grand job of it. Can't wait to see the 'updates' xx don watson, barb.j.enders and amazingkevin 2 1 Quote
don watson Posted November 1, 2020 Report Posted November 1, 2020 It looks a great project but I thought the layers would all be different shapes ?? I have been working on a multi layered piece and the layers are all different, the only reason I would cut 3 or4 layers (I would cut 4) is if I wanted 4 copies of the project. Or am I missing something ?? Don W Quote

don watson Posted November 1, 2020 Report Posted November 1, 2020 That is what I would do, possibly 4 sheets at a time. I am doing a project at the moment and using #3 Niqua blades (plain) but using one sheet as I am waiting for more wood for the rest of the projects I have. One thing I have noticed is that the speed has been turned down to fairly slow and it cuts very well. Don W Quote

Fedido Posted November 5, 2020 Report Posted November 5, 2020 As far as staining, you can pour stain into a aluminum cooking tray and dip the projects to get everywhere. I have done that and it works great. Just a thought. don watson and barb.j.enders 1 1 Quote
barb.j.enders Posted November 9, 2020 Author Report Posted November 9, 2020 Next step - patterns are all glued up. Stacked 4 layers. I did not pre-stain anything as I thought I might. I have the day off today so the cutting will begin. I am planning to use the Niqua 2/0 blades, but will see how that goes. don watson and danny 2 Quote
barb.j.enders Posted November 9, 2020 Author Report Posted November 9, 2020 Very quickly moved to Pegas mg#1 blade. Will finish this piece and see if I can salvage the inner circle. don watson 1 Quote

barb.j.enders Posted November 10, 2020 Author Report Posted November 10, 2020 2 1/2 layers done yesterday. Switched to a #1MG blade. Layer 1, 37 holes, approximately 1.5 hours. Did some sanding between cutting. Layer 2, 29 holes, approximately 1.75 hours. Layer 3, 101 holes. So far about 45 minutes of cutting. danny and don watson 2 Quote

cashew Posted November 11, 2020 Report Posted November 11, 2020 (edited) Nice work!! With 1/8 I usually stack 4 cuz it's easier to control with the extra resistance (even if I don't need that many) -- and #1 mg are my go to blades most of the time -- That looks like one of those designed for a laser cutter so kudos for being bold enough to attempt it since some of those pieces look like they'll be a delicate process separating Edited November 11, 2020 by cashew barb.j.enders and don watson 1 1 Quote

Foxfold Posted November 12, 2020 Report Posted November 12, 2020 It's looking beautiful, it would have taken me a month of Mondays to get this far. Well done. Great cutting ! barb.j.enders and don watson 1 1 Quote

Great cutting ! I am usually frustrated at people who post times as they always seem to cut way faster than I do. I thought I would put it out there for others to see. The speed is set at about 6. Frank Pellow Posted November 13, 2020 Report Posted November 13, 2020 I said earlier in this thread that this looked like it would be fun. Barb, you have now done enough to convince me that it would be fun for me and I will probably purchase the pattern and work on it in early 2021. Thanks! You haven't said, but I assume that the pattern designer is Charles Hand. Quote
