WolfmoonCT Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 (edited) So it took me 2 blanks to make this pen. The first blank, I did not have the tool at the correct angle, and the edge was catching and chipping out small pieces of the acrylic. It turned out semi ok, but there were some small spots that you could see the chips at the edge and in the middle of the body. On the second attempt, I cut lighter and changed the angle and the acrylic was coming off in long streamers that kept wrapping themselves around the mandrel. Had to keep stopping to clear it off so I could see the bushings, but the cut was MUCH better. It is one of the Vertex kits from PSI in gunmetal with one of their carbon fiber blanks. A coworker does a lot of road bike riding and the frame of his bike is all carbon fiber, so I made this for him, though he does not know I did yet. Overall, I'm mostly pleased with it. After putting it together I noticed a few small scratch marks under the clip that I guess I missed with the OneStep and micromesh pads. he'll never notice I hope. WolfmoonCT Posted May 8, 2011 Author Report Posted May 8, 2011 The kit is $8 and the blank is $13 from PSI. I prob won't turn another carbon fiber unless someone asks me to. Quote
toolbeltman Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 Very nice project Kris...I am sure your friend will love it...Interesting to see carbon fiber turned like that.... Quote
WolfmoonCT Posted May 9, 2011 Author Report Posted May 9, 2011 It's a 3/8" brass tube that the carbon fiber is wrapped around, then clear acrylic over it. They have 3 different rattlesnake skin ones too.. I'm real tempted to try one of those. Quote
wombatie Posted May 9, 2011 Report Posted May 9, 2011 Love it Kris you would not know it was your 2nd attempt, it looks like you've been turning for years. Well done Marg Quote
WolfmoonCT Posted May 9, 2011 Author Report Posted May 9, 2011 Stuff like this, I tend to catch onto pretty quick. Now if you were to try to teach me money management.. HAHAHA.. i'm still failing those lessons, though both my parents were accountants. Quote
