I have been using inkscape for a long time now.. but still fumble around with it and have to search youtube etc to learn how to do certain things.. I'm getting better, Yay.. but recently when making my pattern and I try to export the image I get a pop-up saying the selected image area cannot be exported or something like that.. Anyway I just been having to print my pattern right from inkscape.. any of them I want to keep I have to scan the printed image to my computer.. Much nicer to be able to just export the file to my computer..

Anyone know why this is happening?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Kevin

Hey Kevin, I just gave it a try and was able to export a SVG to a folder as PNG. All seemed to work fine. I usually save the file as file type PDF or just SVG. That way I can print them as needed.

Like Dan, I save the drawing as a pdf, then I can print it from any computer, not just ones with Inkscape on them.  If you would want to email the pattern to someone, it is easy for them to use the pdf.  Also, if you modify the Inkscape drawing, you can keep the first pdf to save the original pattern.

I'm going to have to try exporting them in a different format.. I'm not sure what happen but it must be something in my settings.. Saving files in different formats recently for using my laser.. so maybe it's something to do with that.. with the laser I just save file as svg.. but with patterns I export as PNG ( I think ) I'll have to double check that on one of my old patterns.. I did recently at some point try saving to a PDF.. and it took me a few to figure out how to do that.. Maybe I changed a setting somewhere somehow?

Here is a screen shot from this morning..

I couldn't see in the image real well what your sequence actually is.. but I do it like this.

Click File in upper left.. select Export PNG Image in the drop down. Then on the right side tool bar I name the file and click export.. Then the box below that I click save.. But now I just get the message shown in the screen shot.

I was able to save this file as PDF.. however in doing custom orders for people on etsy I have to provide a image.. can't upload a PDF.. I don't know what type of file will show the image if I save as.. For laser files I save as SVG but when I go to my files the icons just show a  e for internet explorer or edge.. and I have to open within those.. I don't care so much what type of file.. but I'd like to see my icons to know what image I'm uploading or about to print.. could be just a computer setting.. I don't know..

Kevin, I was able to duplicate the error you are getting. I'm not sure if it's for the same reason. Check the Filename box to make sure the path is correct. I misspelled a folder and got the error.

WELL, LOL... I don't know what I did... But I started clicking through the tabs on the export toolbar on the right side.. Tabs for " Page, Drawing, Selection, Custom " I don't know what it was set on but I left it on  "page"  and it exported.. so it must have been something I changed on there or it did something on it's own, LOL

Anyway it's working again.. Wish I had tried that a month ago, LOL.. It's been doing this to me for quite a while.. maybe a couple months, LOL

Thanks for all the help you all offered.. I need to look at my screen shot and see what I had it set on... Oh just looked at it was set on "custom "

You're getting an error because you have Custom selected with no values.  I'd either chose Page or Selection.  I usually use Selection and select what I want to export.

I also create PDFs of my patterns.  I use PrimoPDF.  It's a free download.  After you install it, just do like you normally do to print (Ctrl+P) and PrimoPDF shows up like a printer would.  Just select that as your printer, and it will walk you through the rest.

One of the reasons I use pdf to export patterns is that I can use the "print" function, and not worry about all the other stuff with "export".  Just print the drawing, and when the print dialog box shows up, select the "Microsoft print to pdf", and save the print where you want.

Can I add here that it may make some difference if you use the latest version of Inkscape compared to the cherished version you maybe used for the last 10 years ?? 😉

I thought about this, LOL  Of coarse it was just a thought.. and nothing happened by itself, Hahaha

I probably should download the latest version..
