WolfmoonCT Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 I have a pice of 2 1/8" square purplheart that I'm planning on turning for a bottle stopper. My usual method is to put some epoxy in the hole, coat the threads of the stopper with some, then screw the stopper metal into the turned piece. Does anyone see any issues or have any tips when gluing up purpleheart? I've read some guys wipe the surface with alcohol to get rid of some of the surface oil.. others just use regular Titebond wood glue, but I want to use epoxy to bond the metal to the wood so it does not come out. What about finishing it? I was planning on using the Shellawax like on all my other stoppers.. Thanks ! Quote
Clayton717 Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 I have not turned much purple heart, but have use it in my intarsia and just used regular wood glue to glue it to the other pieces and the backer. I finished it with poyurathane. Quote
Dan Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 I've used acetone on oily woods. It only removes oils from the surface and over time the oil will migrate back to the surface. From what I remember, if you wipe the wood with acetone and give it a few minutes to dry, you should be able to finish it and seal in the oil. Only thing I don't remember is the type of finish used. I'll see if I can find the thread that I read. Dan Quote
