Swampkat18 Posted January 23, 2021 Report Posted January 23, 2021 Hi all, I'm new to scrolling, currently using a dremel 1671, but I'm going to look at a dewalt 788 type 1 that I think was manufactured in 1998. Seller claims they bought it several years ago and never used it. Still has plastic on the table. Anything to look for and is this saw still worth getting or should I buy new. Asking 350. jollyred Posted January 24, 2021 Report Posted January 24, 2021 The type 1 is a good saw. One thing to keep in mind with this saw is that the bearings were not generally well greased at the factory. The grease is good for about a year of moderate sawing, then the bearings can start to go bad. There is a video on You Tube about how to grease these, and it is not too bad a job. I did it on mine and it takes several hours. If that doesn't bother you to do, that is a good price for an unused saw. I have had a lot of fun with mine, and no real problems. And welcome to the Village. Tom amazingkevin and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
dgman Posted January 24, 2021 Report Posted January 24, 2021 I have had both type I and type II’s. Even though the type I was made in Canada and the type II’s are made in Taiwan, they are the same saw. My type I wore out just as fast as my type II’s. And, the three 788’s I have had never came with plastic on the tables. That should raise a red flag! $350 is way to much for an over twenty year old saw. GrampaJim and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
Scrappile Posted January 24, 2021 Report Posted January 24, 2021 (edited) Just my opinion,, $350 for a 22 year old scroll saw..... hummmm it had better be a Hegner! New for around $500. So I agree with Dan (dgman). If it runs smooth, and quiet,,,, maybe $150, with stand... Again, just my opinion, and trust me my wife says my opinion is worth nothing... If your are afraid of women you can take her side... Edited January 24, 2021 by Scrappile GrampaJim and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
