Warped Wood

I'm just trying to unwarp a board. I wet the convex side and placed weight on it. Is that the right thing or should I have wet the concave side?

I have put an 1/8" strip of plywood under each edge to overdo it. It's a a beautiful piece of wood so I hope you can flatten it.

A piece of 3/4" thk good flat ply between the warped piece and the weights might help provide a more uniform flattening.   It is also a good way to store flat stock to prevent warping.

I've done this with the thin stuff I just got.. it worked...  I have not tried it if the wood cupped after putting the pattern on.  Can't say it stayed perfectly flat.. some cup did come back a few days later.. but it may be good enough to do if you can get your project cut in a day?

A few years ago I cut a small plaque out of some 1/2 " red oak I had lying about.  It was perfectly flat when I cut it.  After cutting, I dyed it with RIT water based fabric dye.  I laid the piece on some paper towels to dry.  When I checked on it the next day, it had warped and curled so much that it looked like a potato chip.  I turned it over to let air get to the other side and the next day it was flat as it was when I started.

Point is, wood will do what wood will do.  Our attempts to make it do something else may or may not be successful.  You could try wetting the convex side, then allowing it to dry in the sun.  Sometimes this will cause the wet side to shrink as it dries, thus drawing the edges up and hopefully flattening the wood.  It's a long shot, but worth a try.  Wouldn't want to waste that beautiful piece of wood.

It did. But using too much moisture caused it warp in the opposite direction . Im talking about 1/4" wood. Using very light moisture it worked.
