trackman Posted July 17, 2022 Report Posted July 17, 2022 At my local 4H fair the “judge “ placed the scroll saw portrait first, truck in case second an the chess set third. How would you all place these? He said the border on chessboard at one spot had a very small gap. The truck chase had one miter that could have been better (nothing about the truck) Thanks Gene Howe, RabidAlien and OCtoolguy 1 2 Quote
preprius Posted July 17, 2022 Report Posted July 17, 2022 Winners of Woodworking category goes to..... 1) Truck.... many wood tools were used. That guy has talent Just the tires alone will win. The gas pump will give an extra star. 2) Chess set did not use a scroll saw. But band saw art can be great. Chess board squares is hard work. 3) oh boy did I get in trouble here. Since this village is scrollsaw.... The artistic of native indian is awesume. The horse eye paint is pretty nice. Head feathers are so cool. He did not use a lot of color but the red hand is a nice touch of color. Now if the contest was art not woodwork, I would vote differently. 1) scrollsaw, 2) truck, 3) chess. If the chess set was made with scrollsaw with holes in crown would put and smoothed corners, it would be and more fancy frame it could easily go to #2. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Hawk Posted July 18, 2022 Report Posted July 18, 2022 For my 2 cents worth I would have put the truck first, the Scroll saw Native American second and the chess set third. The truck involves a great deal more diversified skills in the woodworking department, while the scroll saw portrait shows a great deal of skill and attention to detail, control , and precision in the cutting. I'd be interested in what the judge used as a measuring tool to award the ribbons. Anyhow, thats my 2 cents.... Chris OCtoolguy 1 Quote
John B Posted July 18, 2022 Report Posted July 18, 2022 I would, place the truck 1st, the scroll work second and the chess board and set 3rd. Going on what I can see in photos. 1) The truck is complicated and takes a different skill set to make something in 3d, along with a certain amount of artistic flair to pull the whole diorama together 2) The portrait is complicated and has many fine cuts. As it is behind glass I can't see how it is finished. 3) The chess board and set. Chess boards are great things, to the uninitiated they are a wonder and a thing of admiration seeing all those squares intricately fitted with no gaps, but it is an illusion. They are much simpler than they seem. Although I can appreciate the work in making this set of chess men, I don't really like them. As I'm not the one awarding ribbons, this is worth what it is OCtoolguy 1 Quote

As you all may have figured out I made the truck an case lol. I just don’t think the judge knew anything about scrolling. He probably thought it was carved or something. Here are the score papers they are to use. John B and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
