planeur Posted September 1, 2022 Report Posted September 1, 2022 Hello scrollsaw pro ! After my garden flowers season , I will have that interesting project ! I have a ceramic lamp that my mother at the age of 17 in 1927, had painted at her school with the nuns , and I would like to make a wood lamp-shade , on my scrollsaw. Birds and flowers will be most of the patterns as the lamp, and as you see I will make it octogonal . The actual lamp-shade in stained glass was made by my sister, which is beautiful but I want to try a wood version! The actual lamp-shade (glass part ) is 10 " hight, and 15 ” in dia. at the largest point at base. The rod supporting the lamp-shade, and the top plate over the ceramic lamp are in brass, that I has just cleaned. The top round plate is 4”, and has to be there for supporting the lamp-shade. I want that we see more the brass plate than presently , with a shorter lamp-shade ) I made a test in paper to see the shape , which is smaller at 10” at the base and 8 “ hight and 4” at the top . And I would also bend the shade at 3/4 near the top , to have smaller top than 4" , but my drawing is not yet finished, still thinking about it. With the lamp colors and patterns, what would be your suggestions for the wood, or others patterns. I was thinking of a bit of ebony , mixed with others woods. Do you have, some ideas, sites, for a lamp-shade of that kind . I saw some on the web. and I try to reach one of them with no result. So I would appreciate very your advises and thank you in advance! planeur OCtoolguy, frankorona, Loskoppie and 3 others 6 Quote
preprius Posted September 1, 2022 Report Posted September 1, 2022 With a wooden top, I would make sure only LED bulbs are installed. Heat is my concern. As for patterns I will leave that to other artists en-lighten us . barb.j.enders and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
planeur Posted September 1, 2022 Author Report Posted September 1, 2022 Thanks prepius, good idea, and It is one of my concern , and the actuals 2 bulbs are in a bad place, too near the lamp-shade. Do you know the good distance for a bulb near wood ? OCtoolguy 1 Quote
preprius Posted September 4, 2022 Report Posted September 4, 2022 Most all led bulbs put heat back to the screw in base. Very little heat comes from the illumination side. Also the led bulbs are at least 1/5th the power / heat. So all leds bulbs should safe. OCtoolguy, planeur and Roberta Moreton 2 1 Quote
planeur Posted February 19, 2023 Author Report Posted February 19, 2023 Hello scrool saw experts, at last my lamp shade is on its way! It will be with cherry wood! À suivre planeur OCtoolguy 1 Quote
planeur Posted February 19, 2023 Author Report Posted February 19, 2023 I began to cut my 8 pieces of wood , without knowing yet how I will do the top part of each 8 pieces. As on the photo, will it be straigh as on the actual shade in stained glass or the final 2" with an angle ???? This way will be lot more difficult , with the cutting at an different angle than the buttom part. So what are your suggestions or ideas ? Those pieces will be around 1/8" thick or more. First cuts today from a big piece of cherry, left from my rocking chair. À suivre....! planeur barb.j.enders, meflick and OCtoolguy 3 Quote
meflick Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 Progress, look forward to seeing what you do in the end. OCtoolguy and planeur 1 1 Quote
Ron Johnson Posted February 23, 2023 Report Posted February 23, 2023 Hi Louis. I would do a similar style of shade in Pau Amarello or Yellow Hart with Ebony accent. Just my opinion. planeur and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
planeur Posted February 24, 2023 Author Report Posted February 24, 2023 I had cut the 8 pieces of the shade , in cherry , and did some tests to cut those 8 pieces at the 67.5° on each side, for fixing them together. And to cut them with the right angle, I have to used an angle piece And cut at the right lengh and made a cutting test with the right angle of 67.5 ° Question : would you have an easy way to glue these 8 pieces together to make the octagon ? I would think that I will have to make a support so the 2 parts to be glued are well supported! But before gluing, I will have to cut at the scroolsaw the patterns ! Like it very much, good challenge ! À suivre P.S. Ron I am thinking about your suggestion planeur OCtoolguy 1 Quote
planeur Posted February 26, 2023 Author Report Posted February 26, 2023 Another step ... So I cut the 8 pieces at the right assembly angle 67.5°, was not so easy cutting each side at the miter saw ,had to be very carefull because of the thin thickness of the wood, and special adjusment for both side angle. With the 8 pieces assemble like that, I will draw the patterns and..... tadam ...... first look of what it is going to look And probably I will use this tape when it will be glue time , what do you think ? Very happy till today! planeur barb.j.enders, OCtoolguy and meflick 2 1 Quote

planeur Posted March 2, 2023 Author Report Posted March 2, 2023 (edited) Now I have to decide what are the patterns I will put on it, looking partialy as my Mother did on the base in 1930 Will be as this one If you have some ideas I am interested ! Need your advise .... about that .... How would you do to hold the center part of the birds , once I cut it from one of the 8 parts. I want to cut only the thickness of the blade. I tought putting a small piece of plexiglass glue behind . What do think about it ? You have surely others ideas.... Today.... First test of cutting and light behind.... without light with light so completed cutting around the bird flower would need something at the back. I could cut a larger stroke to be more visible, or it is OK. And I will also add some flowers and patterns , so the light may be more visible. What do you think .... Thanks ! planeur Edited March 2, 2023 by planeur Scrappile and OCtoolguy 2 Quote

barb.j.enders Posted March 21, 2023 Report Posted March 21, 2023 Looking great. For a shade behind the cutting I used a translucent paper. OCtoolguy and planeur 1 1 Quote
planeur Posted March 22, 2023 Author Report Posted March 22, 2023 (edited) Thanks for the goods words every ones ! I like very much creating that projet! Finition products : what are your suggestions for cherry, ebony ? Normally I use natural oil finition, but with my projet , perhaps I would put a product with more shining as gloss varnish, to look more as the shiny base . What do you think Thanks ! planeur Edited March 22, 2023 by planeur OCtoolguy 1 Quote
planeur Posted March 23, 2023 Author Report Posted March 23, 2023 Here is somes of my inserts , in ebony , and I put to reinforce at the back of the bird (chickadee ) a MDF with real wood on each side , total of .096" , because the cuttings was very delicates ! Still have some sanding on a couple of them! Not finish yet of cutting inserts , I have lot of fun to create all kind of set-up ! So here they are..... the bird as on the base ... or with an red eye .. not sure yet.... and finally the bird is bigger than the others inserts. Very happy .... but still somes to come, and somes will be cut directly in the 8 panels À suivre planeur OCtoolguy and Scrappile 2 Quote

planeur Posted April 7, 2023 Author Report Posted April 7, 2023 (edited) Bonjour ! After a couple of tests and tries, here are some progress, your advises are welcome ! The finish product is not yet on the panel, will wait after the final assembly , with the adhesive. Some sanding and final touch are also to be done on some! Here they are: And the next is not yet decided ( almost ) with or without the wood bird without with the bird and finaly what do you think of my flower transformed in a butterfly after a couple of cutting and with her antenna Very satisfied of my progress, have a lot of fun to create, choose, testing all kind of items to be inserted. À suivre planeur P.S. All the yellow marquetries will have light coming out. Edited April 7, 2023 by planeur Quote
